Description: The picturesque village of Car Colston has 29 acres of village greens and is believed to be the largest rural common in England. The building of The Royal Oak is about two hundred years old and is thought by some to have been a hosiery factory hence the rather unusual vaulted brick ceiling in the bar which certainly would have carried the weight of the appropriate textiles machinery above.Richard & Vicky are members of the British Institute of Innkeeping. With Vicky offering her delicious culinary delights from the kitchen & Richard behind the bar with his fantastic tasting Cask Marque approved traditional real ales you are sure of a warm welcome and enjoyable experience but look out for the reported ghost of a Roman Centurion roaming the building.

We have now been twice and fully intend visiting again.
The food is always spot on as are the ales.
The menu may appear a little limited but don't be fooled as the specials board is amazing with something for everyone!
The staff give great service which for me is just as important as the food.
Many Thanks.

Been twice, both times in the caravan (they have a nice caravan field behind the pub.) Great sandwich and chips for lunch (huge, good choice) a cracking rump steak for a tenner in the evening and an excellent Sunday lunch. It's a friendly pub, the kind where locals talk to you and your dog is welcome. The food is straight forward English grub but perfectly cooked and the ingredients are top class. Plus the prices are reasonable. What more could you want? Look forward to me next visit.

What a disappointment. Ideal position just off the main A46 and at night looks a welcoming sight, but once through the doors it all went wrong. We were early diners so expected the restaurant area to be quiet and it was. We had booked but ordered a drink before being shown to the table. Having sat and decided on our food we waited and waited before prompting the gossiping staff to take our order, not impressed. Sorry to say but what came was nothing special and really not value for money. It was well cooked and pleasantly presented but that was it. The less than attentive staff hardly helped again having to prompt for drinks and this when they are not busy. Glad I'm not the owner. Needless to say we did'nt hang around having paid the bill.

Hi Gordon,
Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience, we welcome any feedback good or bad as it can highlight any problem areas.
Please accept our most sincere apologies for your rather poor visit to The Royal Oak, We have taken on board all that you have pointed out. Unfortunately I was not personally on duty as I had been invited out for the day (which is a very rare occassion I hastened to add) for which I know is no excuse and should't reflect on the level of service that customers experience.
We would very much appreciate a chance to rectify this situation, please make yourself known to me if you kindly phone to reserve another table.
Regards
Richard Spencer

We stumbled across The Royal Oak when a volkswagen show back in June got cancelled, we ended up here instead. The beer is excellent with a good choice - the food is equally as nice with great portion sizes!
A group of us now use the pub as a central location to meet up for a camping weekend, its ideal for us VW Camper owners to settle and set up camp for a few days, what more can you ask for!

Richard & his team have always made us welcome & for this we thank them! A group of us are meeting up for a campout on 1st december..brrrrr
