“Warm, cozy & delicious - a delight!”
Reviewed December 4, 2011

My husband & I have been making frequent trips for years, between our home in Hartford & our beach house in Rhode Island, and have stopped often for dinner in Mystic & Groton. But this past Thursday was our first visit to Water St. Cafe. We're so glad we stopped and will definitely be back. The ambience was warm, cozy & casual on the first night of December, and we were delighted with dinner music by a guitar player, which was wonderful. Food was delicious, and the only reason I'm not giving 5-stars is that, wanting a fairly quick meal, we only had an entree each with no starters, salad or dessert. I had the combo of Duck & Scallops, which though their menu changes daily, is always featured as they're known for it, and I was very happy! My husband is still raving about his salmon with spicy noodles & vegetables.

As others have said, the menu is very reasonably priced. We will definitely be back, though probably not during the summer as they don't take reservations and I can only imagine what the crowds would be like when it's not off-season.

“Can't miss oyster bar and great entree selections”
Reviewed November 10, 2011

There are many dining options in the small borough of Stonington but the leader is the Water Street Cafe. The restaurant is nestled in the middle of the village and offers fresh oysters (Stonington oysters recommended) along with other seafood and varied entrees. Specials are posted daily. We found the duck and swordfish to be particularly good. Don't miss it when in the area and it is worth the drive from out of town.

“Stay away”
Reviewed October 24, 2011

A friend reccomended the restaurant, though she had not been there in a while, but said it had been good. IT WAS LOUSY. Food was cold, no flavor and tasted like inferior ingredients. Staff was disorganized and uncaring. Never ever going back. It did appear to be a good watering hole for locals, to the detrement of unsuspecting tourists. The area around the cafe is quaint and picturesque.

“Striving but not quite there yet”
Reviewed October 19, 2011

Dinner was a bit of a disappointment - chowder was a bit stew-like, and seasoning in two of the dishes was too strong. We later learned the chef was trying something new with one dish, but the taste of raw (not cooked or toasted) spices was overwhelming in both dishes. Dessert saved the day - the chocolate bread pudding was truly divine, made with substantial bread and good chocolate. Also, it was very loud with local families at 8 PM on a weeknight.

“Delicious, creative, healthy dishes in a funky cosy friendly atmosphere”
Reviewed October 6, 2011

Located on the main shopping street in the historic seaside village of Stonington CT. Water Street Cafe has consistently maintained it's reputation as one of the most unique dining experiences in Eastern CT. Locals many of whom eat there once or even twice a week love the always changing menu and creative use of fresh seafood, herbs, locally grown produce and great cuts of beef and lamb. Chef Walter uses only the best ingredients and the consistent high quality and creativity of the dishes ensures a unique experience every time you go. House wines are great and prices are very reasonable compared to many other restaurants in surrounding towns. They do a great business, don't take reservations....go early to ensure a table on weekends. Loyal patron for 16+ years.
