“A Wonderful Spot for a Seaside Dinner”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

The Skipper's Dock is a wonderful location right ON the shore in lovely Stonington, CT. If you just want to have a nice meal at sunset by the water it would deliver just what you crave, but on our recent visit we found it offered a good deal more.

The night we went for a seafood dinner was a Wednesday evening and we didn't really expect a crowd. We were surprised to find the dining room full to capacity. Fortunately, waiting for a table can actually be fun here. The restaurant has a dock adjacent to its outdoor dining area. Some customers actually dock there and stop by for dinner. If you are waiting for a table, the restaurant will permit you to walk along the dock and watch the sun set over the shore, while you wait. After a short while, we were seated in the main dining room.

Once we were seated, we discovered that the delay had been because of a large party (of at least 20) in the main dining room. Ordinarily, this might have made things more difficult, crowded and noisy. But the wait staff in the main dining room was wonderful. There was never a moment when we felt rushed or delayed because of the crowd in the room. Every meal we ordered was delicious. Our drinks and food were wonderfully prepared and were served with promptly with courtesy and care. They really made us feel like friends who had come for a special visit.

“Good food at New York prices”
Reviewed August 4, 2011

Lobster $7.99/lb. at the dock 300 yards away, $35.00 for a 1lb. steamed lobster add $2.00 for baked or grilled, at Skippers. Obviously aimed at tourists and those who don't know any better. Otherwise a pleasant meal, Good serving of steamers, Two large servings of fish and chips, done perfectly, Stuffed Quahogs with large pieces of great tasting chourico (Portugese chourizo) Panko baked flounder nicely done, and Appetizer size crab cakes that served for an entre' easily. $180.00 for 5 people, 3 with entre's 2 with appetizers. 3 drinks from the bar. (OK), 2 chowders, (nothing special) and the aforementioned struffies. Your choice, I might go back if I hit the lottery.

“Location alone doesn't cut it...”
Reviewed July 29, 2011

Quite disappointing - I'm sure I remember this place being better. Plenty of glowing reviews, so perhaps I found them on a bad day. Came for a late midweek lunch with family, whilst my son sailed a nearby regatta. The hostess was only in attendance as we were seated, then hung around the desk chatting with the other girls - since the place was pretty full, I was surprised she didn't make the rounds to check out the customers.

Clam chowder was OK. Lobster roll was crap for $18:50 - half-hearted with dried out French fries. My son was served a flat disgusting cola which was eventually replaced without an apology.

Next time I'm going up the road to The Dog Watch, where they are still making an effort.

“Order the warm lobster roll”
Reviewed July 27, 2011

The food was very good. Eating on a dock is always fun. Order the warm lobster roll on thick slices of toast, with warm gruyere. It's fantastic. The mussels we shared as an appetizer were done well, with a great garlic sauce.

“Great Food, service and atmosphere..couldn't have been better”
Reviewed July 25, 2011

On a recent trip to the Mystic area to do the Seaport and Aquarium, we asked around as to where was the best place to eat , outdoors on the water. The answer everywhere was Skippers Dock in Stonington Borough. We decided to go for lunch. It was a busy place with a beautiful outside deck, right on the water. We started with some kind of drink special of the day, a mango coconut concoction that was perfect for a hot sunny day.My husband ordered the Shrimpwreck Bloody Mary, a homemade recipe with a colossal shrimp perched on the rim. Don't think he'll ever enjoy a BM without shrimp again! We then had the days special of Clams Casino, a favorite that we rarely see on menus any more. At least 8 nice size fresh clams came sitting in the traditional garlicky crumb topping. My husband then had the fried fish sandwich..a huge piece of white fresh cod...just the way a fish sandwich should be..great seasoned fries. Everything piping hot. I had the hot lobster sandwich..an equally generous amount of lobster claw and tail meat, on a toasted bun....no mayo as we lobster lovers know it should be. With a little drawn butter for dipping. We wished we had room for the wonderful sounding desserts. We noticed that a lot of people around us were eating whole lobsters and mussels, a great lunch treat. Think we'll do that next time.Service by Jen? or Jan ? was super. Overall, a great experience. Can't wait to go back!!!
