The Lighthouse museum was easy to find, just go thru the small town center on main street to the end, half mile to the watersedge. The museum has several small rooms full of local artifacts. You are allowed to climb to the top of the lighthouse, nice view of where three states meet. The staff was very friendly and made you feel welcome and comfortable.

Only for those interested in lighthouses, a little off the beaten path and not that easy to find.

This is a great museum for anyone interested in lighthouses or history in general. Stonington light is a unique building build way back in 1823 before lighthouses were cloned. The original light was moved in 1840 because it was in danger of being washed away, and the tower was rebuilt and raised. I believe the lighthouse was replaced around 1900 by a beacon out by the breakwater and the land sold to a private party. It ended up with the Stonington Historical Society.
The museum has several rooms containing many artifacts and historical pieces found in the area and some great old photos. The really great part is the original 1855 6th order Fresnel lens still on display inside the museum. It's a short climb to the top of the tower and great views of the harbor and sound. After visiting the lighthouse you can walk around Stonington village and view historic houses and sites, many with signs explaining their histories and origins.
