“Delamar Southport - an unexpected taste of luxury”
Reviewed October 16, 2011

The room was well-appointed and spacious, with special touches like slippers, robes, and complimentary chocolate and wine. The concierge-style service was unexpected and delivered with a friendliness you do not find in large cities. Nearby were two very good restaurants and a nice spa to and from which the hotel provided shuttle transportation. I visited the Delamar as a retreat with a friend, but look forward to returning with my husband for a quiet weekend away from it all.

My girlfriend and I found this place online and had a great extended weekend stay. We had a "Superior" room, at it was very nice, spacious, and well-furnished; a great value for the money. Additionally, I am 6'4", so I especially appreciate the 7'-high showerhead in the bathroom! Service was very friendly, although as a new hotel, some of the staff seemed to still be getting the hang of things (this was much more amusing than annoying, though). The restaurant is amazing. The nearby town is small and quaint, and the neighborhoods are full of large old houses; a great place for a stroll. If you're looking for a romantic, relaxing, and affordable getaway, you can't go wrong with this place. Recommend.

Room Tip: Get a Superior Room. It's worth it and not much more expensive than a regular "Deluxe"...

Although this recently opened (2 months ago), for the price they charge, there should be more educated staff. The check-in girl didn't seem to know too much about the restaurant. The bartender in the restaurant didn't know about the hotel. This hotel accepts pets ($50 charge) but outside the front door, and on the property, there are no trash bins (for doggie waste) or areas designated for walking the dog. It's an odd mix of elements on the exterior, seeming to be residential townhomes alongside office and hotel so I was uncomfortable walking the dog through what seemed to be private yards...but no sinage indicating keep out. The room, lowest rate room, was comfortable enough except the bathroom has a very small vanity (only countertop in the bathroom) so I had to put my items on the floor. We had to pay for coffee in the morning, which for the room price, they should set up urns in the lobby and offer it complimentary. It's located next to 95, so it's easy off and on the highway, but there is a lot of road noise in the room from trucks and traffic on 95.

Room Tip: We were told we had a courtyard room but were looking out at 95. A courtyard room may be more quiet...

The Power Company could not begin to estimate when we were going to get back online so after 3 nights of sticking it out at home we opted for a treat (power, shower and A/C). Worth EVERY penny (and I did think it was quite fairly priced when I looked at the extended stay places and saw that they were only charging 20 bucks less).
Check in was great, the staff had lots of personality and was very understanding of the guests' situation. Some folks had been there for 4 or more nights, with no end in sight and were happy to stay. The room is very well appointed, comparable to a 4 Seasons or Ritz. Great bathroom, linens and little touches that I did not expect in a hotel around the corner (robes, slippers, water, chocolates, nice toiletries).
Parking was a breeze and seemed very safe and just far enough away from the rowdy crowd hangin at the bar across the way.
The ONLY not-so-positive comment I have is that guests should be offered a choice (if there is one) of a room that does NOT face the restaurant. Noise from the outside bar continued well into the night and the music from the breakfast service in the morning was too darn loud. We would have gladly taken the room anyway but it would have been "nicer" to be apprised of the noise - I am not a big fan of surprises when I get to my room.
Overall, the hotel is damn near perfect. (Breakfast at the restaurant is worth the drive from anywhere!)

Room Tip: Rooms that do not face the restaurant will be quieter.

The hotel seems to be a renovated block of row houses connected together, and they did a nice job. The rooms are very comfortable, and while the view is nothing to rave about (looks out over I-95), they are extremely quiet... you don't hear street or highway noise at all.

They have a nice exercise room, and most rooms have a little refrigerator, coffee maker, etc. The internet is also free ... a good thing, nothing drives you more nuts than paying $300+ for a room and getting nickeled and dimed for the internet... kudos to Delamar for making that free.

Everyone is helpful, but they just don't have the polish and rhythym needed to give a 5 star experience. Things just seem a bit awkward... it just doesn't flow like a matured 5 star hotel. For example.. nice exercise room, but they hadn't restocked the towels and water (someone came up at one point and finally did it). Called about a plumbing issue, and they forgot we called and had to call again, at which point they fixed it no problem.

The restaurant has opened and we had breakfast there... the food was very good, prices reasonable, but again missing the cooridination (brought the wrong tables food to our table, for instance... confused about which of the multiple servers took order, etc).

So... very nice staff, very nice hotel, very good food... they just need to get the coordination down if they want to make that last star!

We stayed in a second floor, Superior Room with a king bed and fireplace (which we did not use) overlooking the courtyard for two weekend nights. The bed was very, very comfortable, and the room overall very pleasant with good water pressure in the shower. Finding a half bottle of wine and cookies in our room when we arrived was a nice touch. We picked the Hotel Delamar for a weekend getaway in part due to its proximity to the Metro North train station, which is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

The first night we walked to Paci, an Italian restaurant in a converted train station and enjoyed the eggplant and pasta dishes. The second night, we had a stellar dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Artisan, and would highly recommend it. Our dishes included the tuna crudo, homemade salmon gravlax, crispy duck breast, a fish whose name escapes me, and the Delight (cheesecake ice cream, raspberry, blueberry, strawberry sorbet, muscatel glaze). For lunches, we ate at the Grey Goose across the street, which we also enjoyed.

Front desk service and bellman service (the gentleman helped us with the hotel’s bikes) were very good. Housekeeping was a bit spottier, as we left our room on Saturday around 11 am for a 2 hour bike ride and housekeeping had not been to our room in our absence, even though I left the Service Please sign on our door. On Saturday evening when away for dinner, I thought that we might get turndown service, but again, our room was not touched while we were at dinner. We did, however, receive turndown service on Friday night.

Overall our experience was positive, but a few cautions. The Artisan tavern (which is adjacent to the restaurant) has outside seating space with a bar in the courtyard. Last call is at 1:30 a.m. As the weekend nights wore on, we noticed a definite increase in the bar noise level which we could hear in our room. The windows appeared to be double paned, so I am not certain why we were hearing as much bar patron chatter as we did. Being on the second floor, we heard the footsteps of the third floor guests and we occasionally heard murmurings from the guests in the adjacent room. The sounds of the other guests did not pose any sleep issues, but I mention it because other reviewers have indicated that the hotel was much quieter. We would stay here again, but only in colder weather when the outside bar is closed.
