Big things come in small packages. I remember my parents telling me this as a child as I looked dubiously at the packages under the Christmas tree. I have, on occasion, used the same truism with my children. If ever there was a classic example of this, it would be the Meadow Restaurant just outside of the center of Simsbury Connecticut about a 40 minute drive from Hartford.
Located in a small strip mall along Route 44, Meadow does not seem like much from the outside. During good weather there are tables arranged on a small terrace fronting a parking lot and a sign proclaiming Meadow – Asian Cuisine. So let this be a caution to those travelers looking for a large sign and a standalone restaurant. It is the food and service inside that makes this one of the great hidden jewels in central Connecticut.
The restaurant is run by Sam Lin and his wife, Hei Shu Gao. Almost every night you can find Sam standing behind the cash register next to the bar. He will greet you with a smile and your name if you have been there a few times and show you to one of the thirty or so tables in the main room. The staff is expert, friendly, and most of them speak English very well. I have been to places where this is not so and never been comfortable at those places.
Once seated and drink orders submitted, you can browse through a menu that contains both Chinese and Japanese dishes. There is a Sushi bar in the front of the room. I am not a Sushi enthusiast but the dishes coming from that bar are beautiful to behold. My daughter eats Sushi and tells me the sushi at Meadow is excellent. I can readily testify to the rest.
The food is hot, fresh, and lacking the grease and stickiness of ordinary Chinese cooking. The chicken wings come off a real chicken and not some half-starved pullet. They are crispy and very tender. The bone-in spareribs are another treat with enough of them on the plate to be a meal in themselves. They are tender without falling off the bone and the flavor is such that you might want an extra order to take home. The sauce on the Orange Chicken is rich and tangy.
I could go on but this is a review and not a menu description. Chinese is a common experience in the US. There is Chinese food(American style) available almost everywhere. For those of you who like Asian cuisine and are looking for a truly special experience, you would be well served to take the time to visit Meadow if you are travelling to or just passing through Hartford. Sam and his staff will insure that you take away nothing but pleasant memories of your evening.
