While on a road trip through New Haven, I stayed overnight at the Hyatt House Shelton. Positives: Helpful staff, ample free parking, good value. Negatives: room bit snug for four people, guest room door closings resonate down the hallways.
I was looking for an affordable hotel that was fairly close to New Haven, and came across the Hyatt House. I am glad that I found it. The hotel has lots of free parking, both in a lot adjacent to the hotel, and in an underground parking facility. I parked underground upon arrival, then realized that I needed a hotel key to enter the main door underground. Fortunately, I was able to use the house phone to call a front desk staffer, who graciously came downstairs to let me in.
I was traveling with my wife and two small children, and we were given a room with a separate bedroom with a king bed, and a sofa bed in the living room. The room was equipped with a kitchen, including refrigerator, stove, microwave, and dishes. The bathroom had a tub and ample towels. The closet space was more than adequate, and both the bedroom and living area had their own TVs.
The hotel offers a complimentary hot breakfast buffet, including an omelet station. The buffet includes several options. The first floor of the hotel also has a bar and a pool table.
My only complaints were minor. First, the furniture in front of the sofa bed is rather heavy and takes some effort to move in order to open up the sofa bed. Once the bed is open, the room feels a bit cramped because the foot of the sofa bed is near the entry to the bedroom. Smaller parties are unlikely to encounter this problem. Second, when the guest room doors close, you can hear the slam down the hallway.
This was my third extended stay at the Hyatt House in Shelton in two months. I spend time between Milford and New Haven when in Connecticut, and there is no comparison to hotels in either city in my opinion. Staff is always helpful. Breakfasts are great. Rooms are FABULOUS! It's a given that I'll always continue to stay here when in the area. Keep up the great work!
The Hyatt House is an excellent deal for room and breakfast. We found the room to be clean, quiet and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is a little bar that had a lively crowd, pool table, swimming pool, full breakfast buffet with an omelet station. I saw a lot of families and couples during our stay. Easy to find off the highway. We stayed here on a trip to Westport and would return if we are in the area again. No complaints, a really good bargain!
If you are on route 15 in Connecticut heading north just shy of New Haven, and you are tired and ready to call it a night, you have a tough decision to make... keep going, cross the bridge and head over to Hyatt Place in Milford or head north on route 8 a couple exits to Hyatt House in Shelton. This review is about the latter since we stayed at the Milton property previously. We went on a weekend to get a great deal including free hot breakfast in fact including custom made omelettes. How'd it go? Great. Got into first room and smelled the faint hint of tobacco (whole property is smoke free so the loser before us probably got 200 tacked onto his bill. I am NOT anti smoking by any means. But when you are a guest? Follow the rules.) Hotel response to the smoky odor? They put us down the hall in a mini suite. And so the rest of our stay went well as you'd expect. Three well know restaurants within walking distance means you'll have a happy meal. Bar open 5 - 9 ... that's a nice feature on site except when it is populated by the loud crowd who had had about 1 make that 2 drinks too many. At least they didn't spoil our breakfast.
We are from the Raleigh, NC area and travel a lot. From the moment we checked in and were greeted with freshly baked cookies, to a clean comfy room, to a superb breakfast I was highly impressed. We were in the area for family visiting and had some family come meet at the hotel. They were greeted in the same friendly manner and we all felt welcome as we visited in the lounge area. The fact that I was able to travel with my senior Pug pal was a hug help. I commend Hyatt House for making my trip a true vacation!
