“Surprisingly good Mexican restaurant in Central CT”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

Ate here in the aftermath of the hurricane while we were staying in a motel nearby. The food was actually tasty and not typical New England/gringo-style bland Mexican food. The service was excellent. And the pitcher of margaritas was perfect. We upgraded to Patron, added fresh lime juice, and got two good drinks for each of the three of us and it was only $30 for the pitcher.

“Decent food and excellent service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2012

Like most chain restaurants, On the Border franchises can be good, bad, or indifferent, depending on the skills of the local management. The Rocky Hill location is actually far better than some other locations I have eaten in over the years. We last ate there about ten years ago and decided to give it another try while in the area recently.

The most impressive aspect of this location was the management and waitstaff. Arriving guests are promptly greeted by the manager and the hostesses and are promptly seated. The waitstaff is equally prompt, attentive, and efficient. The carpeting was littered with bits of food debris from diners' laps and needs to be vacuumed more than just once a day before opening time.

The Tex-Mex food items are decent enough, the seasonings and recipes are all a bit different in flavor and preparation than most other such restaurants, but not outstanding by any means. There is a nice variety of draft beers (although XX Amber, my first choice, was oddly not available at the time) and the beers are fresh and served very well chilled. If you visit during a heavy traffic time, such as weekend evenings, the wait for food delivery can be considerable. Clearly the kitchen capacity is not adequate to service a full house.

After waiting a half hour for my meal, it was served stone-cold, indicating it had been sitting for a long time after preparation. I will have to admit that the staff handled the problem extremely well: the offending meal was whisked away quickly, I got prompt and sincere apologies from the manager and two waitstaff persons, a replacement meal was delivered in five minutes, and the item was deducted from the check. Can't ask for a better resolution than that.

Not only is the food terrible, this restaurant always looks dirty and smells funny. Ive given it a few chances, but im done, also the margaritas are a rip off. Theres hardly any liquor in them at all.

Great food and service. There was a line when we arrived but the wait was minimal. Prices are reasonable.

This is a typical mexican chain restaurant. If you are in the mood for it then your craving will be satisfied. Nothing special here . Average mexican food. Queso cheese dip is tasty. I found the portions to be small.
