Okay - so Bagel places usually don't get reviewed. And they usually aren't worth paying much attention to them. We were in Ridgefield just for an hour to drop something off with family. Since it was near Noon (and family's fridge was empty for anything to entertain with), we asked where to get a quick bite. Steve's was the recommendation - and it was just what we needed.
Hidden away off the main street in a small plaza, you won't find it with looking. The first thing you notice on entering is the line. Okay - it was Sunday at Noon, but the people were here for a reason. You could smell the bagels (a lot of varieties) and coffee. Busy as they were, service was fairly quick and efficient and you could watch your bagel be buttered - or schmeared.
Quiet, we ate at one of 8 or 10 small tables. And, as fresh as the coffee was, and as perfectly chewy the bagels were, I wouldn't have even bothered to review Steve's except for one thing - lemon zest caper cream cheese. My bagel came with a big portion of lemon zest and caper cream cheese that was really a great surprise. It was creative, fresh, clean, tart, tangy, went perfectly with the salt bagel - and was startlingly unexpectedly good.
I will not be foolish enough to tell you to drive to Ridgefield to try Steve's bagels. Or even to put on flashers on Main Street while you walk the block. But if you're there - and you're hungry - and you need something that is just right without overpowering, try the place. And if you a caper type person, do NOT miss that cream cheese.
