“Friendly down-home feeling in Connecticut”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

My daughter and I were touched by the kindness and sincerity of Mary and David. It felt like we were visiting friends of friends. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and we felt very much at home, which was especially nice as we were on the last day of a week-long college tour. They recommended the perfect restaurant for fresh seafood - the last for us before heading home to the heartland. They were eager to please, and knowing that I was gluten-sensitive, made gluten-free pancakes topped with David's own maple syrup (David taps his maple trees and boils the sap down to syrup himself).

This is the second time we’ve stayed at this lovely B&B, and it was just as warm and inviting an experience as the first time. Dave and Mary are very gracious, welcoming hosts. They are very sincere and accommodating. They made our stay one of the most pleasant aspects of our visit. We’ve stayed in both main bedrooms now, and they are equally charming and comfortable and include all the amenities you could need. The beds are extremely comfortable, and the pillows were the best we’ve encountered in a great deal of traveling. All made for a great night’s sleep. Breakfast each day was wonderful and substantial. Both Dave and Mary are good cooks. We will likely visit this area of CT again because we have relatives in the area. And when we do, we will definitely stay at this wonderful place. We would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Gracious hosts at a delightfully relaxing B&B. I highly recommend it if u are looking for quaint New England hospitality. Very clean, quiet, and super comfy beds. Absolutely the best pancakes I've ever had with enjoyable morning conversation. Not too many great spots to stay in this area of Connecticut unless you are fine with Motel 6-like places, so I would put this unique place on your list of must-stays!

I want to start by saying that I never write reviews but I would be doing Captain Josiah Cowley’s Place an injustice if I didn’t. This B & B is OUTSTANDING to say the least. The place is conveniently located next to the highway and easy to get to (which has no impact on how quiet and serene the nights were). The rooms are spacious, very clean, air conditioned, furnished with a large flat screen television, and very cozy. The bathrooms have the amenities you need and are very clean as well. However, what makes this B & B stand out are the hosts – Dave and Mary.
In many hotels and B & B’s, you sometimes get the sense that the hospitality received is only because you are paying customers. In this B & B, you never feel that way. Instead, you feel like one of the family by the time you leave. Dave and Mary are absolutely wonderful and caring hosts. They sincerely take an interest in you and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and taken care of. They provide you with a great room and the little extras here and there during your stay which have already been mentioned in other reviews, including letting us borrow a cooler for the day. The homemade breakfasts are nothing short of delicious and very satisfying (I never left feeling hungry). I don’t know what else to say but, “Thank you, Dave and Mary, for your warmth and hospitality during our 3 night stay. It was a pleasure to meet and reside at your establishment. If we happen to be traveling to anywhere in your area (which will most likely happen again), you will be the first and only ones we reserve a room with.” Highly recommended without a doubt.

Lovely 1730 frame house with large yard that includes maple-trees the owners tap for the syrup to pour on Dave's delicious pancakes. We had spacious room and bath upstairs, but narrow stairway for carrying luggage. Owners very kind and helpful, recommending restaurants and sights plus giving us a card for free appetizer or dessert at Anthony Jack's in Southington. Dave and Mary served wonderful breakfasts (including fresh fruit and yogurt plus hot dishes, all homemade). They also left homebaked chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies in afternoon for a snack. Common room with Keurig coffee maker plus guest refrigerator and microwave with adjoining deck overlooking shady backyard. Close to highway but rural atmosphere with Southington the closest town.

Room Tip: Believe there are only two rooms. Ours was on front of house so you could hear noise of morning tra...

My wife, daughter, and I stayed at this B & B in the beginning of June for several days. The historic home has a great appeal and is decorated very appropriately. Mary and Dave made sure we had everything we needed. The location is great, allowing quick access to restaurants, attractions, and the major highways. We would recommend this B & B to anyone.

We thoroughly enjoyed our three nights at Captain Josiah Cowles Place. Mary and Dave are perfect hosts, making great recommendations for sightseeing and dining. The house is historic, of course, but also quite welcoming. The area has lots of attractions and the B&B, just two minutes from the freeway exits, is close to Hartford, New Haven, Waterbury, and other spots in central Connecticut. Highly recommended.
