“Nice hotel, but service needs a lot of improvement”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2009

We spent two nights at this hotel this past weekend. The hotel is brand new, so new that they were still putting up outdoor lights during our stay. The staff is friendly but is badly in need of training. Housekeeping did not clean our room after our first night. When we called the front desk, we were told "I guess they forgot" and were told there was nothing that they could do since it was 4 PM. This is a completely unacceptable response! We booked through Travelocity and the front desk staff did not know how to deal with this when we tried to check out. After standing there for nearly ten minutes while the two front desk staff whispered to each other about things to try to get the computer to check us out, I asked if we could just leave and they told us they would mail a receipt which has not arrived 4 days later.

The breakfast was included and was pretty good. There is a waffle maker where you can make your own fresh waffles, a selection of breads and bagels and a toaster, bran muffins, hard boiled eggs, a couple kinds of sugared cereal, packs of oatmeal, and orange and cranberry juices. We had to ask at the front desk for them to find cups for coffee and had to ask again for them to get more syrup. There was yogurt the first morning but none the second. It seemed that no one was monitoring the breakfast area even though it is directly off the lobby.

Also, the walls between rooms are very thin. People in the next room came in at 11:30 PM, and they were having a conversation that was on the loud side of normal. It sounded like they were right in our room. You could hear every word!

The hotel is a good value compared to other options in the Mystic area. It's about 10-15 minute ride to Mystic Seaport. The staff needs a lot more training in how things should be run.

We've never been to a bad La Quinta, so when we decided to stay a night near Stonington, CT, I was delighted to find one nearby. It turned out that the building was nearly new (not redone), having just opened in July 2009. It is located about a half mile off an I-95 exit, and pleasant local roads take you to Stonington, Mystic, et al. The room was quite large, with a king bed, small sleep sofa, desk, refrigerator, microwave, wireless, and all the other stuff you expect in a modern facility. There's a nice pool and exercise room, and the breakfast selections were extensive. Our room faced the busy road out front, and noise was no problem. I cannot imagine any reason I'd stay elsewhere in the area.

I hate when front desk staff are young and act like haha we've got you and we run the show. ... We drove by on a Friday afternoon mid August on our way to the shore where we had a Friday night room booked closer to the beach. We had hoped a saturday night room would open and we could stay 2 nights. When we passed this BRAND NEW La Quinta on Friday my wife called the number on the banner out front. She was told they have plenty of rooms for Saturday and rate was $169. Well we should have booked at that moment, because the next day we pulled in after a day at the beach and the young staff only offered rooms at $269 - nearly 300 with fees/taxes. We grabbed it anyways and chalked it up to experience. I asked could they honor the rate we were given on phone and was told no - there were limited number of rooms now and supply and demand applied. Oh well - free breakfast was mediocre at best and they were always out of something, so you would have to ask for more... Nobody seemed to be in charge of breakfast on a very busy summer morning. I would only return on a cheaper rate say from hotwire or priceline. rooms were nice and new.
