We went recently on a weekend of lunch. Two sisters appear to run the place; one is the cook by herself and the other sister serves and takes orders. We waited about a half hour for two tagine dishes (sausage and vegetable and the other an apricot chicken). Well cooked but could have been a bit more spicy. Not as good as other Moroccan food we have had such as in San Francisco, but decent. Be ready to wait quite a while for the food. Place is really small.. only a few tables and a couple of picnic tables outside.. If there are more than a few people in the restaurant you'll probably wait a LONG time for food…

Thank you for visiting us. We appreciate all reviews and hope to improve our service with every one we receive. I do appreciate that you feel that 30 min is a bit of a wait. I cook all of my food to order to ensure the freshness and the quality that all of my customers have come to expect. We are not a fast food establishment. As far as the spicy quality of the food, Moroccan food is not indicatively spicy. If you had not had Moroccan food before you might not have known that and just expected it to be spicy. We may have overlooked it, but we usually ask if you want it spicy or not. My apologies if this did not happen. Please keep in mind that when you time an order you must wait for the order to arrive in the kitchen to be prepared. If you were here for 10 min before you ordered, it took 15 to 20 min for your order to be prepared and brought to you. This is an usual time frame for anyone to wait if food is cooked fresh rather than just held in warmers and put on a plate.

We have been going to Tissa's for years and it is hands-down our favorite restaurant in Old Saybrook. All ingredients are carefully chosen, and the taste combinations are nothing short of inspired. Chef Kathy has a great knowledge of the various cuisines found throughout the world, and draws on this to create a special kind of magic in the kitchen. Great for lunch and a cozy spot for dinner (bring a bottle of wine with you).

Known mostly for lunchtime sandwiches and ice cream, this historic building has housed a number of different business while we've lived in town. Tissa's has lasted the longest in recent history for a reason, it serves great fresh food. You often have to wait a bit, but it is worth it.

During the winter, Tissa's has begun offering dinner Thurs-Sun, though the hours are limited as are the number of tables, so it's most important to make a reservation if you want dinner. Last night my wife and I both had the Apricot Chicken Tangine which came with a very good sized house salad. Both were great and we'll be back to try some of the other dinner entrees. They plan to expand the dinner days when the summer returns. They'll need to expand the number of tables too. You can always stop by for great small batch ice cream.

My wife and I stopped at Tissa's for lunch. We both enjoyed the vegetable wrap - fresh ingredients cooked while you wait. While the wait was extensive, it was worth every minute! The food at Tissa's is prepared WHEN it's ordered, not partially done ahead of time. The difference is in the TASTE. While waiting, be sure to look around this quaint and historic building - formerly a drug store and ice cream shop dating back to the 18th Century.

I have had the privilege of traveling to many countries around the world and seldom do I come a place that can even come close to Tissa's. Not only is the taste wonderful, but the QUALITY is unmatched!! Don't be fooled by the Moroccan base line either - the menu is very eclectic and gourmet, having the capability of pleasing a wide range of appetites. Go for it! Try something new!!
