The location of this hotel was great. The ambience was quite special too - you are able to watch the extremely busy street from the comfort of al fresco dining "streetside"; or, relax in the cool haven that is the dining room, courtyard cafe or your room. The style of the hotel invokes beautiful facades, large and very old magnolia trees, carrera ceilings, an elegant wooden staircase with wood panelling throughout the hotel. My husband said that this was his favourite hotel - ever. We will definitely be back.

Stayed for 3 nights in May at the start of my stay in Laos.
The resort is set about 30mins outside Luang Prebang in the ‘jungle’ of Laos. When you book there are great perks to booking direct such as their free pick-up service, treks, classes etc so check out their website.

I was so lucky to have the resort to myself and felt completely spoilt. The owners couldn’t do enough to make my stay comfortable and friendly.

I would point out that although the wooden villas are extremely comfortable and well equipped, there is no air con and you do need to sleep under mosquito nets. If spiders, moths and general bugs are not your thing you might want to think twice. It also involves short walks up and down slopes/steps so those with mobility issues should be aware.

This is a great place to relax and do as much or as little as you want in stunning surroundings. I did yoga each morning for an hour and cannot think of a better way to start the day overlooking incredible scenery. Evening meals offered a good variety and were very reasonably priced.
A wonderful start to my stay in Laos.

This place was very peaceful with helpful staff and great food. If you are considering I would highly recommend spending 2 or 3 nights in town and then when you want to get out of the town come here for 2 or 3 nights. The one downside of this place is that it can be difficult to get to town and they will take you town for free sometimes but only when they go, which sometimes is only every 2 or 3 days. Great place, but would recommend stay a few days in town then a few days here.

From the moment we arrived at Zen we that knew we knew that we made the right choice. The welcome was warm and we felt immediately immersed in the beauty of the natural surroundings.

We had booked 'Plenitude', a bungalow set in an isolated spot, accessed via a bamboo bridge through the jungle. Just crossing the bridge to reach our bungalow was an adventure in itself and arriving at it, perched on the edge of the mountain with breathtaking views, we realised it was worth the hike!

Our room with it's huge balcony, tasteful decor and attention to detail offered the perfect balance of comfort whilst absorbing the natural surroundings. Waking to the sounds of the jungle and the sunrise over the montains was unforgettable. A certain level of fitness may be required to reach the dining area but the food made it more than worthwhile!

The infinity pool, whilst uncovential was a delight and offered the most stunning views across to mountains and a means of cooling down on a hot day.

As well as a varied and tasty breakfast menu, the evening options completely satisfied our tastes for SE Asian food, and was of a very high standard. Service was always excellent all round.

We spent 6 fulfilling days at Zen, relaxing and participating in local activities and would highly recommend a stay here!

Room Tip: Choose 'Plenitude' for the extra adventure and stunning views!

If peace and tranquility in elegant accommodations with excellent food and service is what you’re after, you have come to the right place. We whiled away the afternoon on our balcony overlooking the river and mountains beyond and felt like we were a million miles from anywhere. This lovely resort is located about 30 minutes from town, partly by dirt road. We stayed in Serenity, one of the lovely villas overlooking the river. Once you are there, settle in and enjoy the beauty of the location and the laid-back vibe. There are massages (adequate, not super professional, $20 for a massage in your room), boat rides on the Namkhan, a small pool and a suspension bridge down to the river where you can splash about if you’re traveling with kids. They also have yoga classes before breakfast and dinner, and cooking lessons. But the best part is just sitting on your balcony - or in the library area over the dining room - looking over the Namkhan and the mountains with a good book or a cup of tea or coffee. It is NOT a good base from which to explore Luang Prabang if you plan to go into town more than once; ideally you should combine a couple of days here with a stay based in town. There is a free shuttle that goes into town in the late morning but you’d need to work out a return trip.
There is a friendly dog and several sociable cats milling about. You don’t have to pet them - but it’s awfully hard to resist if you like animals.
One minor drawback: there is free wifi in the dining area but it’s not accessible from your villa. No easy plug-points in the dining room either.

In the restaurant, we recommend the red and green curries, the Laap, the fish in banana leaves (requires advance notice), and especially the fried seaweed with peanut sauce (like potato chips but better).

We stayed in the stunning family suite at this resort in the jungle and had a really, really great time. I would highly recommend splitting your time in Luang Prabang between the town and this isolated spot in the forest. The rooms are very rustic but beautifully appointed. Our large verandah opened up to the forest, valley and mountains. Falling asleep to the jungle sounds was an incredible experience. The staff are very laid back but attentive and very, very friendly. Khamsaen is especially amazing! Don't be expecting a five star service kind of experience. Zen Namkhan feels more like a family welcoming you into our beautiful home.

The best part of Zen Namkhan, however, was the food. The owner, Chansome Moon, does the cooking and it was hands down the best we've had in Asia so far. Other guests also remarked on how good the food was. Please try the local Laotian food!

The resort is built on the side of a cliff and there is a lot of steep stair climbing so be aware. Lastly, the jungle trek across the river was very, very, very hot (February). It was mostly through farmed landed and I'm not sure I'd do it again. Also, I wouldn't bother with the elephant rides but we watched people riding them in the river and it looked like an incredible amount of fun. Lastly, the two hour sunset cruise on a local river boat was the highlight of our time in Laos. Ask Khamsaen to arrange.

Room Tip: Family Suite for 4-5 was incredible.
