I went to Tony Z's the former Lombardi's pizza in Northford last night. The Z stands for Zuppardi. Zuppardi's of West Haven my favorite pizza restaurant. Finally some good pizza close to home.

In the heart of a small town you will find an italian restuarant known for its New Haven style thin-crust pizza and then you realize you have found a gem! The dough is tender, thin and so delicious that you will find yourself going back over and over again. Its a family affair that dates back generations and once you've tasted the secret recipe sauce, your hooked. They offer inhouse homemade sausage, meatballs and a variety of toppings to satisfy every mood. The atmosphere is easy going and friendly, but expect a bit of a wait on Friday nights at the dinner hour. Best to call ahead for a specific time to pickup or eat in to try the appetizers with a glass of wine! Just make sure you save room for the pizza, the star of the show!

In an area of the country famous for pizza, you would think that every Pizza/Italian restaurant would be wonderful. Many iconic, thin crust pizza places in the greater New Haven area have national reputations and have set the bar high. Unfortunately, most suburban pizza makers seem to be going through the motions and slapping together thick, dry, tasteless and overpriced pies with bland sauces, prepared in stainless steel gas-fired ovens. You have to read the box to see where it is from, since they all seem to taste the same.
Tony Z's started with a family business in West Haven and there, it developed a reputation for really good appiza. Their homemade sausage and fresh clam pies are legendary. Fortunately for the suburbs, they opened a brand new restaurant in Northford, on Middletown Ave near Durham. In this attractive, easy to get to building, they are carrying on an honorable tradition that raises the product from bland to wonderful.
An amazingly friendly staff takes care of business promptly and with humor. The pies are perfect. They are so good, you want to sample other meals, but don't want to miss the chance to get a pizza. It takes will power that we just haven't found yet.
If you are in the mood for pizza and are in the area, you should give them a try. This is one place where you will not have to read the box to remember where it is from.
