“Good quality and value”

We ate at de Kelder on two occasions and were pleased with the food on both occasions. On neither occasion had we booked, but they could find us a place. Portions tend to be large; a salad starter is almost big enough for a main and the main courses are similar. Glasses of wine are similarly large at 250ml.

The food is good; a beef fillet ordered rare was red and lamb ordered as pink was pink. Everything is reasonably priced and the service is smooth and efficient.

“Cuisine and ambiance of a high quality in PE.”

It seems as if the restaurant, De Kelder, on Port Elizabeth's Marine Drive has been there forever. This traditional restaurant offers guests a little old fashioned value; an extensive and interesting menu and well trained staff.

Between my wife and I we enjoyed both starters, a smoked salmon 'stack' and the springbok carpaccio. This was followed by the duck. The duck was cooked to perfection as was the rare Kudu steak.

We highly recommend this restaurant - tread cautiously though, it's not for the financially faint hearted. There are those special times when the price didn't really matter - this was one of those. Thank you De Kelder.,

“calm and friendly atmosphere with great food”

the owner is visible and comes round the tables to check that her guests are pleased with their food and service. Our waiter was attentive, and had a smile of his face...likes his job. A great place to eat.

“Best restaurant”

Best restaurant in Port Elizabeth. Service is good, staff are friendly. This is my third or fourth visit and the food is great.

“An exceptional restaurant”

Attached to the three star Protea, de Kelder might be mistaken for less than exceptional. During our month of travel in Africa, we found De Kelder to be one of the very best restaurants in which we had the pleasure of dining. I ordered the prawn platter in oil and garlic with a side sauce of peri-peri. Unbelievably delicious and perfectly prepared. My husband began his meal with the Greek chicken soup which featured a very lemony but meaty/chickeny pieces in a perfect broth. He continued with the baby chicken peri-peri that I believe was freshly cooked for him. Again, he pronounced it delicious. The decor of a cellar ( hence the name) was charming and the names of the oak vats familiar and well known. One small flaw was that the service was a bit slow, but the excellence of the food more than made up for that. Servers were pleasant and helpful, however.
