“Fun fall afternoon”

Took the family to check out the fort on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The museum is fairly new and well worth the trip. There are several short films which tell the history of the area and submarines. The museum is one of the best state parks in CT. The fort itself isn't particularly large but it is well maintained. Some of the rooms within the fort show how the soldiers lived at the time. The walk on the fishing pier was nice too. Plus the kids loved climbing on the large cannons. The gift shop was nicely priced compared to the larger forts in NY. Kids got a musket ball, small canon and some books. We will visit again. Next is fort Griswold across the river.

Was there Labor Day weekend for the commemoration of the Battle of Groton Heights sponsored by Connecticut Sons of the American Revolution.

Amazing piece of history.

“Fort Trumbull”

We decided to stop in at the state park, seeing as neither my husband or myself had ever been there. We have both lived in CT all our lives. It was worth the entrance fee to go into the museum section, there were video shows with the history of the fort from the Revoluntary War until recently. The walk around the grounds was nice, the view from the top of the fort was great. We also got to go on the Coast Guard's tall ship the Barque Eagle, it was extremely nice, but it was a self tour and one could spend the whole day on board.

“Too bad it was closed”

We stopped by on a Tuesday only to find the visitor center, gift shop, and buildings are open Wednesday thru Sunday. The parking lot and grounds are open until dusk daily and there are paths to walk around the fort and along the water. There is a fishing pier that is open to the public. There were markers throughout the property so that we learned about the fort even though we could not go inside. It's a nice place to walk, picnic, fish, or just relax.

“Connecticut History”

A nice place for a stroll while you view the fort. There is a small gift shop. Parking is plentiful and the view along the river is very peaceful. We brought my Mom who needs smooth surfaces for walking and she enjoyed it as well. There are stairs in some sections, but you can stick to the path if you want to avoid them. You can access the same area by walking between the gift shop and fort.
