“Fort Trumbull”

We decided to stop in at the state park, seeing as neither my husband or myself had ever been there. We have both lived in CT all our lives. It was worth the entrance fee to go into the museum section, there were video shows with the history of the fort from the Revoluntary War until recently. The walk around the grounds was nice, the view from the top of the fort was great. We also got to go on the Coast Guard's tall ship the Barque Eagle, it was extremely nice, but it was a self tour and one could spend the whole day on board.

“Too bad it was closed”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

We stopped by on a Tuesday only to find the visitor center, gift shop, and buildings are open Wednesday thru Sunday. The parking lot and grounds are open until dusk daily and there are paths to walk around the fort and along the water. There is a fishing pier that is open to the public. There were markers throughout the property so that we learned about the fort even though we could not go inside. It's a nice place to walk, picnic, fish, or just relax.

A nice place for a stroll while you view the fort. There is a small gift shop. Parking is plentiful and the view along the river is very peaceful. We brought my Mom who needs smooth surfaces for walking and she enjoyed it as well. There are stairs in some sections, but you can stick to the path if you want to avoid them. You can access the same area by walking between the gift shop and fort.

Good view of the harbor. Museum provides an excellent history of the fort from the American Revolution through WWII. Learn about failures as a fort defending the town and harbor and its successes as a research center that provided the answer to the German U-boats. Great visuals and demonstrations in the museum as well as displays in the fort.

“best way to relax after driving to New London”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

What a beautiful old fort and magnificent setting. Peaceful and relaxing to walk around. Opens toward end of May. Since it was not open, the place had lots of friendly families having picnics. The signage set the stage so we could understand. Great that it all has been preserved.
