“Beautiful Views, Coast Guard History & Fact-packed Musuem”

Fort Trumbull State Park
Ranked #1 of 37 things to do in New London
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 25, 2012

Fort Trumbull State Park is free to access the grounds, but costs $6 per person to enter Fort and museum. The Fort provides excellent views of the Thames River and if just beautiful from the top level. The first level of the Fort is interesting... There are interpretive panels that follow time periods of the use of the Fort and Coast Guard history, which are great. There are rooms on one side that you can see through windows with no clarity as to why they are set up like that. Nice setup, but the Fort would really benefit from guided tours. Them museum is wonderful, but overwhelming amount of panels of facts and context. Interactives and movies were wonderful. We know much more than we did when we began our visit here!

The first time I went the fort was closed (on Mon and Tue) so my friend and her twin 9 year old girls just walked around the grounds. We liked it so much we made a trip back later in the week. What a great place. The grounds are well kept up and the museum was just terrific. There are lots of things to read in the fort itself describing what has gone on here since it was built. In the museum there are hands on things to try as well as videos and audio presentations. It was not very crowded when we went so we could take our time. There is a cost to go inside the fort (and on the top floor which has a fabulous view) and for the museum, but it is well worth it.

The cost of the fort is now only $6 ($2/12yr and under) the museum has three 10-12 minutes films. we spent about 1 hour in museum. The inside of the fort is not much. View from top is best part. The Coast Guard's ship "Eagle" was in port.It is free to go onboard, but you are not allowed inside. The fort is right on the river's edge and the surrounding grounds are nice. Lots of restaurants in nearby downtown New London.Overall it is a good day as we live only 40 minutes away. Would have only rated it "good" if we lived farther.
