“La Dump in New Haven”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2010

This was the 2nd night of our summer vacation in New England. We ate dinner at a place over on US-1 and ask about hotels in the area. Waitress tells us La Quinta is close by. Says to go back and get on I-95 to get there. That should have been my first clue. Well, we went surface streets and went right through "the hood" to get there. Its right along I-95. Wife gets the room and I am unloading all the luggage to a cart. 11 yr old daughter goes up to the room with the key and screams down the hall. Someone is in our room. No, our room either had someone in it, or it was never made up from the last stay. Ok back to the front desk. Get another room on the 7th floor (no it wasnt lucky number 7) Hallways were not air conditioned and were very hot. Get to the room and only one bed with a pull out for family of 3. Ok, need sheets on the pull out, we did it ourselves. Wall with a column in the middle of the room, thats odd? One lamp didnt work, it wasnt plugged in, but then again if it was, it wouldnt work anyway as it didnt have a bulb in the lamp. I look at the ceiling where it had been repaired, and also where they painted over the smoke detector that are clearly marked do not paint. Carpet on the baseboard went up the wall and covered 2 electrical outlets creating a fire hazzard. In the shower there was toothpaste or something on the ledge where you keep your soap and shampoo. Under mounted sink in the bathroom was falling down from the counter top about 1/2 inch. The place was a dump for $85 a night. I brought all items to the attention of the front desk and she took $40 off the room.

This is the only hotel that I've stayed at where a a regular single room becomes a "Suite" simply because there is a sleeper sofa in it. The bed and the sleeper were both in the same room, which was not quite what I had in mind traveling with teenagers. The sleeper had a very thin and very worn mattress - the kids had to put the cushions over it to get to sleep. To tops things off, there were pillows and sheets, but no blankets. I went to the desk and asked for a blanket. The clerk looked, couldn't find any and said that someone would bring one up. They never did. We went downstairs in the morning (with 2 sleep deprived grumpy teens) to find out that the hotel was "pet friendly" - to the point that they allowed dogs in the dining room. I would have thought that that was against health codes, but evidently La Quinta doesn't worry about little things like that. The pool was a lovely shade of green - must be going for the Lagoon look.

Situated at less than 5 minutes drive from the New Haven Amtrak station, La Quinta is a great place to stay. The rooms are large and nice and the service is excellent. Would certainly stay here again

OK, let's start with the first fifteen minutes of being there......apparently a guest had an injured pet and there was blood all over the lobby...on top of the wet dog smell and feces in the elevator. Decided to go out by the pool.....well, my too young children learned the "n" word, witnessed a "booty" contest and apparently people that do not wear bathing suit tops but just tshirts that all can see through....when I told the management staff, they did come out and give a verbal warning, but the lovely, classy folks at the pool kept right on going...oh, and did I mention the verbal child absue to their OWN children! This hotel was a absolute LOW CLASS NIGHTMARE. I guess you get what you pay for! Never ever stay at this facility!!!!!! Oh, and I slept about an hour, because every move you made on the bed, even moving your arm, the squeaking was so incredibly loud it woke you up. and I also loved the screaming people in the hallways at 1am and the hotel staff did NOTHING about it....OH and did I mention the police were called to the hotel THREE TIMES during the course of our stay!?!?!? and are pools supposed to be cloudy!?! yeah, I didn't think so!

I have never stayed anywhere as disgusting and uncomfortable as this hotel. I had requested a razor from the front desk and when I got to my room and opened the plastic bag (sealed only with a piece of tape) I discovered it had been previously used! There were hairs on it and it was discolored. Because of this I went and got another one - it too had visibly been used before. After seeing that it made me wonder just what other disgusting shortcuts the staff were making. Aside from being repulsive, the front desk handing out used razors is extremely dangerous. Has anyone there ever heard of HIV?

Although not as gross, the beds were also very uncomfortable and there was nowhere else to sit aside from an office chair and small pullout sofa (both of which were equally painful).

My family and I make quarterly trips to New Haven and it is needless to stay we will NEVER stay at this or any other La Quinta again.

This hotel is situated close to the Amtrak railway station, this is why I chose it. We walked (having 2 pieces of big luggage and a baby in a buggy) over a bridge within 15 min to the hotel in the night (11 p.m.). The surroundings are industrial and therefore not beautiful, but the area is safe even in the night. There are many cabs in front of the station if someone prefers a ride by car. If you walk out of the station, turn left, at the bridge again left (onto the bridge), and after crossing the rails over the bridge, at the next road again left, you will then already see the hotel next to the IKEA warehouse. If you walk slowly, plan 20 min instead of 15.
The staff was very nice, having a baby cot wasn't a problem after 11 p.m. (!), the room was very spacious, freshly renovated and comfortable. Free and uncomplicated Internet connection was available. We just spent one night so I cannot evaluate most services. However, one of the greatest surprise was the breakfast (included in the price, 79$). Instead of the usual American hotel tradition of offering only a few very sweet donuts or bagels with coffee or tea, this hotel had everything a 3 star European hotel would have: lots of different bakeries, meat, cheese, milk for the baby, orange juice of excellent quality, different kinds of tea, fruits. Toast, microwave oven, child's seat was included. Meal to go was not a problem. I will certainly stay again here the next time.

Stayed over Memorial Day weekend. Stayed here because most downtown hotels were booked or had jacked up rates for Yale's Alumni weekend. Daughter who lives in area stayed with us and had car, so getting around wasn't a problem. Location of hotel is near I-95. Rooms on ocean side have good view if you look beyond the interstate below. Not real easy to get into town from this location, but streets in New Haven are an adventure under any circumstances. Room was clean and maids did a good job. Complimentary breakfast was average for this class of hotel - hot waffle, cereal, yogurt, bagels, etc. Finish work on room was pretty shoddy - gaps around outlets, etc., but that seems to be my experience with La Quinta. Rates were decent - averaged around $130 per night for the holiday weekend including taxes, about half the price of many hotels in New Haven. One queen bed in our room was great, the other sagged severely in the middle, like kids had been jumping on it or something. Had a great time in New Haven - went to beach, toured the Thimble Islands (strongly recommend it), visited Yale's campus, had lots of great meals. Lots to do in the area. Would stay here again under similar circumstances, but plan on trying somewhere different next time.
