“Exquisite Food in Downtown New Haven”
Reviewed April 29, 2012

This was the most exquisite meal my husband and I have had in New Haven -- or anywhere else -- in quite some time.

Every dish was excellent to exquisite. We started with Sea Vegetable Salad, which is citrus marinated arame and hijiki combined with radish, carrots, scallions and sesame seeds served over mesclun greens. It was so delicious and interesting, one of the highlights of our night.

We also ordered an appetizer called Gobi Manchurian, which is cauliflower tossed with Indian seasonings, breaded with chickpea flour, fried, and finished with sweet and spicy tomato sauce and fresh cilantro. Was that yummy!!! . . . probably the best dish of the night. It was rich and sweet, but not too sweet, with lots of crunch. A wonderful juxtaposition of flavors and textures.

Our main course was Pistachio and Herb Encrusted Tofu with Corn Cake. Fresh herb and pistachio encrusted tofu, pan seared corn cake, and sautéed greens with red pepper and jalapeno relish and cilantro chutney. The encrusted tofu was a bit of a disappointment; it was quite soft and a bit bland and the crust was soft instead of crunchy. We were happier with the flavorful pan seared corn cake underneath the tofu. The spinish, relish and chutney were delicious.

We also ordered a side order of asparagus and it was most flavorful.

The ambiance of the restaurant is very pleasant and calming. It wasn't very crowded when we were there. The service was prompt and polite.

“Try it even if you eat meat”
Reviewed April 24, 2012 via mobile

An old friend and his spouse were in New Haven yesterday. Manch does not eat meat; we decided to try this new vegetarian restaurant. Red Lentil lies under, could say," crunched under," the massive Temple Street Parking Garage. Once one entered, the place is very plain, almost austere. But wait, service was friendly if not greatly knowledgeable. And, good hesvens, the food was good. The pizza could match Pepe's. Good cheese, fresh mushrooms, the crust slightly blackened. The 'shepherds pie' was more like a chunk ol lasagna but released layers of differing tastes. The 'macrobiotic' dish disappointed. It was a mostly bland mix of inseasoned vegetables. (Wasn't really macrobiotic and the restaurant should strike it from the menu.) All in all , though, the non-'macrobiotic' dishes were better than merely good. They were full of taste and well-prepared We will return---and maybe offer to help paint thr walls a less forbidding colot.

“Awesome vegetarian!”
Reviewed March 22, 2012

Love that we found a unique, creative and delicious veg restaurant DT NH! Well priced, good sized delicious servings, very attentive service for a Friday night. We were not very impressed with the Thai peanut noodle salad- thinkkng noodles should have been warm instead of cold... Maybe timing of delivery was off, but portobello sauté app, butternut squash polenta and nirvana delight were awesome and almost made us forget entirely about the salad. Great unique beer menu, even if limited. Will definitely return soon.

“Eh. Food ok, service sub par.”
Reviewed February 25, 2012

My husband and I went here during lunch break while attending a seminar in New Haven, starting around 12:05, so prior to the lunch rush. We were joined by our toddler. Very nice offering and wide variety of dishes on the menu. We ordered the Greek Pizza, a children's Cheese Pizza, and the Zen Veggie Burger. Plus, soy milk for the baby at $2 per HALF GLASS, ouch. Atmosphere is strip mall Japanese inspired. Service was fine at first- not great and it took a while to order drinks and then food...despite the fact that only 2 other tables were occupied. Plenty of (warm, iceless??) water before food arrived. Food took oh, 45-50 minutes to make its way to the table. By now, toddler has gulped soy milk, is no longer hungry and is screaming to move on with the day. We soldiered on...burger was good, sweet potato fries good, Greek pizza great. Child's pizza sauce was very spicy - I had a hard time eating it and my husband couldn't. Baby wouldn't touch it. We devoured because of time constraints and baby meltdown. No more water for any of us as of the arrival of our entrees. We were never checked on after entrees were brought out. The restaurants had, at best, 6 tables occupied. So, we ate as best we could...and then we waited. And waited. And waited. I finally took the baby and left to return to the hotel. My husband wasn't able to join us for another 20 minutes! Lunch took over an hour and a half. No apology for the wait, no apology for the slow service, no apology for the lack of attentiveness during our meal, no apology for letting drinks run down and sit empty for over a half hour... Needless to say, our tip was reflective and we would not return if we were in New Haven again. Also, the menu was pricey, in my opinion - and we live in a pricey area.

“Very healthy and unique food”
Reviewed January 18, 2012

As vegetarians, my family is always looking for new places to eat. Red Lentil, new to New Haven as of 2011, serves only vegetarian and vegan fare. We went with family there for brunch. We ordered waffles, pancakes, tofu scramble and a sandwich. Everything was flavorful and presented well. There was a wide selection of drinks and juices-the cranberry juice is actual juice, with no sugar added. The wait staff was very friendly and well-informed on the menu. The decor is simple and fresh looking-acid green walls are not really my taste though. The prices were good for the value of the food. There were several other people coming in and out to eat, but it wasn't too crowded. My only complaint, being a new mom, is the lack of changing stations in the restrooms. Being new, I hope Red Lentil hits a stride with locals and stays in business. There should be more diversity in choices of where to eat.
