“chic, well-designed, quiet, comfortable, with extremely attentive service”

This small hotel, recently remodeled, has beautifully designed rooms, with a long desk, the width of the room, facing a wall--sized window, marble bath, a large new leather chair for reading, large flat screen TV, comfortable beds with lots of pillows of all sorts of thicknesses and types. The service is young and extraordinarily attentive, the elevator so quick, the restaurant downstairs terrific (I had a delicious duck with pears and some good Pinot noir from Oregon), and free lattes and croissants in the morning, made for you fresh by another friendly and helpful staff member.

Room Tip: I asked to face the back, and overlooked lots of Yale gilded cupolas and the Yale Rep.

Recently, I have traveled through new england and the eastern states looking at colleges with my children. Mostly, our choices to stay are standard Marriott style hotels or old home style B&Bs, thus my expectations for The Study were minimal, yet my experience far exceeded expectations. The staff is friendly and helpful, the restaurant offers excellent foods, the lobby is welcoming offering free coffee and tea, newspapers and books to browse; and, it is comfortable to hang out in reading or working on a computer while also a great place to meet up with friends, the location is fantastic for visiting Yale's campus, and the rooms offer free wifi and iPod docking stations. My only dissatisfaction was the size of the bathroom (minuscule) and the meagerly equipped 'fitness room'.

I only spent one night here before a meeting in Cheshire but what a find! Comfortable modern room, lobby with coffee & tea available, free wifi everywhere (although it didn't work for most of my stay) and a great location on Chapel Street. Highly recommended.

The Study is a very nice hotel, not over-the-top plush, but somehow apt for New Haven. I had a sixth floor room with a King bed. The room was larger than most with a comfy leather chair in which to read and a work surface that ran half the length of one wall with huge windows overlooking Yale campus. It was actually pleasant to work (or "study") there. The bed itself was dreamy. What is it about nice hotel sheets and pillows? It was hard to pull myself away from the bed. Otherwise the room had all the necessary items -- nothing more, nothing less -- and was clean and quiet. The hotel was pricier than some others in the area, but then, it is also nicer IMHO. Great location for visiting Yale.

The Study is well-named. I felt strangely compelled to devote myself to reading and writing from the moment I walked into the lobby (which is full of books and comfortable places to curl up and read). My room was the right size and notably featured a desk stretching across the front of the window, both broad and deep. There was plenty of room to set up my laptop, plug in a keyboard, and spread various open texts around me. Oh, and they had a jar full of #2 pencils, perfectly sharpened, on the desk. And a USB charging station right there.

If you will have some work to do while visiting Yale, this is really the ideal place. The rooms are decorated in a sharp modern style and the beds are comfortable. My sole complaint is that on several occasions I found the scent of cigarette smoke intruding into my room.

The whole place was scrupulously clean. The location is excellent, being within 10 minutes walking distance of many important campus buildings. There are many very good restaurants within just a few blocks. At least three Thai places, two Indian, a pizza joint, and a world class sushi restaurant (Miya's Sushi).

I stayed here one night while visiting Yale, and it was very comfortable. The view from my modern room looked out over old-fashioned Yale buildings. The staff were very helpful, although they could not find me a cab after a 3-foot snowstorm the day before. The highlight was running into David Brooks at breakfast. By the time I thought of something to say to him and overcame my reluctance to bother him, he was done eating, so he successfully avoided me. I had read he was taking a course at Yale in his column, but never expected to see him. Without the suit he wears on TV, and being rather short, he did not look impressive, but it was still a thrill.

Room Tip: Ask for one high up with a view over Yale.

While the rooms are very minimalist in their appointments, the hotel is the best of New Haven. With clean, well-lit, modern spaces, and attention to detail, a fantastic location and a great restaurant, it is hard to imagine what more you could want. The penthouse is an event space, which has walls of windows looking out over Yale- a beautiful space for a reception or party.

Room Tip: Request a view looking out over the Yale campus- vs. the street view facing Chapel- for beautiful su...
