“Finally, a hip hotel in New Haven!”
Reviewed May 16, 2011

We recently stayed here for a wedding (thus benefitted from a wedding rate of $189/night). I grew up in New Haven and for past family visits I've stayed at the Omni downtown or Marriott in Orange-- this is so much better! Great service, great location, rooms were impeccable and very cool design. We had two connecting rooms-- one with a king bed and one with two doubles. Our rooms overlooked Chapel St and the Yale School of Art. The only complaint was that it was a little noisy about 9-11PM-- even with the light-block shades drawn, but not enough to keep us from coming back. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

We recently spent 3 nights at this new, ultra-modern hotel and it is by far the nicest hotel in New Haven (previous stay was at The Omni). Great location for Yale campus visits, theaters, and museums. Plenty of good eateries within same block and beyond...JoJo's coffee shop on the corner, Sullivan's pub across the street (good, reasonably priced food, friendly staff) and Thai place two doors down to name a few (also try Atticus one block down for breakfast -- great bakery/ book store -- there's a few of those in the neighborhood). We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant because there are so many more reasonably-priced and casual choices nearby. The bar service on a Saturday night when they are busy is near non-existent. Restaurant staff not nearly as friendly as the rest.

Cannot say enough about their valet guys and especially loved Bobby! These guys are super friendly and hustle! Hotel staff in general was pleasant, but these guys were outstanding. Yes, valet parking is $22 a night, but that's typical for hotel valet parking which can sometimes run as high as $30 a night in some cities.

The rooms are a nice size -- comfortable, contemporary, very clean, and well-designed with the exception of the bathroom (in our particular room) which was extremely small (room for one) and poorly laid out (personally I don't like having to reach behind me to find the toilet paper roll). Just got the feeling that the bathroom design was an afterthought in this particular room. Our room faced the street on Chapel which can be loud with sirens and street traffic -- still managed to get a good night's sleep since it's not an "all night" city like NYC or others. Cudos for the best blackout shades ever installed in a hotel room! Free wifi another plus and a MAC in the lobby for guest use as well.

Overall, an excellent hotel and no contest for where we'll stay on our next visit to New Haven!

Room Tip: Stay away from street side if you can.

We stayed at the Study for two nights recently on a college-visiting trip, and I could not recommend this hotel and its staff more highly. The room was spacious, modern and clean. The internet was free. The view of campus was terrific. On one snowy day, the bellhop made sure we left with a huge umbrella that saved us!

Stayed at the Study at Yale for three nights while researching at the Beinecke. The hotel is wonderfully located for any business on campus - only a 5-minute walk to all the libraries I was using and those central streets felt absolutely safe, even at night. The rooms are modern, very comfortable bed as another reviewer mentioned, free wifi internet very useful and welcome. Might have been nice to have a bath as well as a shower after a day hunched over a desk, but the shower was top of the range. Also - incidentally - the best phone line I've ever had in a hotel. There was a loud fan attached to the heater that kept waking me up in the night, but this may also have been down to the jetlag. I ate twice in the restaurant/bar downstairs - the food was excellent. This is where the hotel was perhaps too chic, though - the atmospheric lighting was really too dim to read my trusty solo academic's paperback, and I felt a bit like the sad solo diner - mind you, I was there on Valentine's Day. Breakfast was great but quite expensive and had a kind of businessy feel - meetings and job interviews going on - there are also lots of coffee shops between the hotel and the library.

I had business in New Haven for three days, and found this gem. First off, the room was very well appointed. Great set-up for the desk, blackout curtains, large leather reading chair, and above all, one of the best beds I've ever slept in. Then there's Heirloom, the outstanding restaurant downstairs that's open late. All in all, just top of the line, and I would not hasten to stay there again.

We throughly enjoyed our stay at The Study and would definitely stay here again. The location is convenient to several great restaurants. The wine bar in the hotel was a great place to sit and relax at night. The entire staff was great!

We stayed at The Study for 2 nights over Thanksgiving weekend - got an excellent rate because New Haven was deserted over the holiday. Public areas are very attractive and stylish; our campus-view room offered lovely nighttime views of the lighted campus buildings (daytime views are a little grimy, but we weren't in the room much during the day). The room was beautifully appointed - high-end fixtures everywhere, including best-quality magnifying mirror mounted near the bathroom sink. The fittings were so sleek & minimal we were hardly aware that it was actually a smallish room. Staff very pleasant & friendly. Cons: pricey valet parking, though there is limited overnight street parking in front of hotel, and less-expensive-than-valet public garage nearby; no ice machines -- room service delivers ice, but telephoning & then tipping for each bucket got old. The hotel is not so luxe that an ice machine on each floor or even every other floor would be unthinkable -- I'm sure there are Euro ice machines out there that would fit right in.
