Owner description: Note: The Center is temporarily closed for building conservation through February 2016. We apologize for any inconvenience. The Yale Center for British Art is a public art museum and world-renowned research institute. Presented to Yale University by Paul Mellon (Yale College Class of 1929), the Center houses the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. The collection of paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, rare books, and manuscripts reflects the development of British art and life from the Elizabethan period to the present day. Works on view include masterpieces by Thomas Gainsborough, J.M.W. Turner, and John Constable, as well as artists from Europe and America who lived and worked in Britain. Perhaps its greatest treasure is the building itself, a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by architect Louis I. Kahn. Located in downtown New Haven, the Center is near many of the city's best restaurants, theaters, and shops.

“British Art in New Haven”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

The campus buildings and area around Yale University is lovely to walk around and two art museums are right there on Chapel Street -- fascinating. The Yale Art Gallery, which now has an astounding collection of Ancient Art, is across from the British.

“Half the building is closed until year end, 2013.”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

Conservation of a number of art works is underway and thus, the second and third floors are closed until December, 2013. There are no special exhibits, but the fourth floor does contain a major portion of the standing collection. I suggest you include in your visit the Yale University Art Gallery.

“Amazing collection with great descriptions”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

After more than twenty years of driving past New Haven, on the journey from Boston to New York and back, we decided this weekend to stop and visit the Yale Center for British Art. What we found was a very pleasant museum environment (I think it has recently been renovated) and a well organized and very large collection. For me the stand-outs were paintings by Hogarth, Turner and Constable--all of which were made more interesting/understandable by the really tremendous written descriptions. Who knew, for instance, that Turner was extremely competitive and Constable was not, and that Turner was occasionally miffed that his contemporary was so laid back and not rivalrous like him? To top it off, next to the gallery are a couple of good coffee shops and there are restaurants a block away. Overall our experience was tremendous and we'll definitely be back.

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

Worth a visit even if only to see the architecture of the building and you have no interest in the art. However, there is a very broad collection of art that spans the centuries and is well curated.
