Owner description: Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

A very nice museum with exhibits well arranged.
displays were well annotated and wide ranging from ancient egtpt, Greece, Rome to modern current art. Well worth a visit when in the area.

“Great space, wondeful collection and free.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

After paying a hefty entrance fee at other venues and then staying too long and moving too fast in a vain attempt to get my money's worth, coming to Yale and relaxing in front of some of their amazing collection with no charge is a nice change of pace.
Because we only spent a couple of hours there I can't attest to the breadth of the entire collection, but from the third of it that I guess we saw (mostly modern, impressionist and some photography), I'd say there is more than enough to keep anyone happy.
Don't neglect the walk up to the fourth floor study room for a couple of great pieces and a magical view of part of the Yale campus.

“Great way to spend some time, and free!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

Everything from Islamic Art, to European painters, to sculpture can be found here. It is free to the public and will take some time to go through. My only complaint is that the security does make you feel a tad unwelcome.

“Lovely Ancient Art & Impressionist Paintings - and Free!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

If you like ancient Roman and Greek sculpture and pottery, and/or Impressionist paintings, don't miss a visit to the Yale University Art Gallery. The African Art Gallery also had a really interesting collection of masks, sculptures, and the like which our teenage son, despite saying he wasn't interested in African art, ended up being fascinated by. Admission is free (!) and on-street parking (bring quarters), as well as a nearby garage, make access easy. Within 2 blocks, there are several very good, casual cafes where you can go for coffee and dessert or a full meal. Allow 2-3 hours for the museum.

“Newly reopened”

If you liked this museum before, you need to go back. They've expanded and have a lot more exhibits than before.
