Owner description: Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

“One of the Great University Museums”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2012

Having seen close to 400 museums in the USA, I can honestly say that when you talk of the great university museums, you must put the Yale University Art Gallery close to the top of the list. Just Van Gogh's "Night Cafe" alone is worth the visit. This is truly a wonderful museum and while you are visiting you must go across the street to see the Yale Center for British Art.

“Continues to get better every year...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2012

I feel lucky to have a first class museum so close to my home and my college. I send my students there to do term papers and am frequently amazed by the quality of art they get to see. It is worth a trip if only to see Van Gogh's Night Cafe.

“Art + architecture = alchemy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2012

Extraordinary building(s) offer an insight into those things that are 'built' as well as created. We are changed by the process of entering any of the spaces in addition to the exhibits of sculpture or paintings or drawings or any media. The renovations are as compelling as the collections. What would Chapel Street be without it?

“New Haven's only world-class museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2012

The first university art museum, the Yale Art Gallery has been collecting since the 1780s, with taste and the resources of an elite alumni. Some particular strengths: Dutch masters are outstanding (including Rembrandt, Van Dyke), modern art is innovative and brilliant, American art rarely equaled. The Louis Kahn wing has been completely restored and is state of the art; the Trumbull Gallery renovation will be finished soon. Amazing collection, and it's free.
