Owner description: Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

I take student groups here every year to see the Modernist and European History gallery. It's spacious, well arranged, with security on every floor. The students love it and have a great time. Groups are limited to 15, so even the patrons around us do not appear to mind.

We were pleasantly surprised by the collection at the Yale University Art Gallery. We enjoyed the "Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" exhibit--unique early American pieces, with great narratives. That took one day. We went back a second day to finish our visit. The gallery has a wide ranging collection--African art shared a floor with Asian works, from Bronze age to contemporary. The European floor had old masters, a Van Gogh pool table painting we had never seen before, other impressionist and contemporary pieces. It's clearly a collection of works that alums have left the school, so there's no particular theme. But it's fun and quirky, especially on the top floor where they show works that apply to what the current art students are studying. The older Gothic wing (actually a museum in itself) is under renovation, so we'll be back! I'm sure there are many more gems hidden in the basement of the building.

This museum is an outstanding college museum. You will find a variety of artists from all time frames and places in the world. It is a smorgasbord of delectable art pieces that you can enjoy for free. The people of New Haven and the surrounding area are very lucky to have this gem of a museum to savor.

4 floors of various paintings, nothing unusual. Worth a visit if in New Haven and you love art. Otherwise, head to the Met
