The Roger Sherman is an institution in New Canaan--it's been there for years. 11 of us went for drinks after an interment service in a nearby cemetery. We arrived just after 3 p.m. on a Monday afternoon, just as the bar was opening. We were the only ones there for the next 2.5 hours but the bartender and assistant were terrific--very attentive. The inn and grounds are beautiful. We didn't stay for dinner (there is only a bar menu on Mondays) but beware that this is a place frequented by extremely wealthy people who don't even blink at $50 entrees and $100 bottles of wine. The bar tab was reasonable for 11 people, however. Check the menu out online before you go to be sure it's not beyond reach. We have never dined there so can't comment on the quality of the food. There's also a charming inn for those looking for something other than the usual Hilton or Doubletree.

I made a Saturday night 8:00 reservation via OpenTable, and had written that we would be celebrating our anniversary. We are both over 40 with 2 kids, and a 3rd on the way. We arrived at 7:50. The host told us that we were early, and that our table was occupied by a couple that arrived at 5:30 who were just finishing up dessert. So, we waited in the crowded bar (standing) until 8:20. Finally my husband asked the owner how much longer it would be. The owner told us that they gave our table away due to the inclement weather, and then upon realizing that I was pregnant he tried to sit us at a table in the noisy bar near the waiter station and high traffic area. After I indicated that this was a special occasion, and that we had requested and been waiting for the dining room, he told us it'd be another 15 minutes. We were finally seated around 8:50 in the dining room. The service was good, the food was good, the soufflés were great. The owner apologized to us, but did not comp anything. This restaurant obviously caters to the 50 and older crowd, and doesn't appreciate the patronage of 40 year olds. It was unfortunate, because we don’t get a night out away from the kids often, and the Roger Sherman Inn was a stain on what was supposed to be a special occasion.

This gorgeous place is delicious and fun thanks to its new owners, Joseph and Nes Jaffre.
They have most definitely livened the place way up! While always elegant and delicious, the place was "tired" and "old". Now, it is vibrant, elegant and delicious! They have added live music to the mix, and have pumped up the volume on fun~~hosting a Super Bowl party and an Oscars party...a wonderful place for a romantic dinner, a fun get together with friends, or drinks on the porch.
When I see Nes at the front door greeting us, I think, "yes, let's stay a while"
And, we do!
