“Sleeping on the MysticRiver..”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2007

Steamboat Inn (bed&Breakfast) located fifty feet from historic downtown Mystic's 1922 drawbridge. First floor 'Kathleen' room is huge, two room could sleep 4 at least. Has king bed and a sofabed, just six feet from the River. A few more screens on the six windows would have allowed for more air on this terrific june day/evening. Tall ships (3-mast too)pass within yards of our room as the bridge opens every 40 minutes past the hour (if needed). Continental breakfast in the upstairs common room wasa crowde at 8:30am and the Sherry and cookies at mid afternoon seemed to be a waste. Several restaurants &bars/taverns in easy walking.

  • Liked — On the Mystic River, great views.
  • Disliked — First floor room had no screens, therefore safety was an issue.

The Steamboat Inn in Mystic really ended up suprising both my new husband and me when we went on our Honeymoon to New England recently. We have stayed in a lot of so called "inns" in toursit towns and have been more disappointed than not in the past. This was truly an exception. Great staff and breakfast each morning. Light fare including cereal, a variety of breads and jams, hardboiled eggs, cheese sticks, and a homemade muffin each morning. Of course there was coffee and a variety of teas. Sherry and cookies are offered each evening although we never had the opportunity to partake in them. We were in room 7, Carolyn. It is the most private entrance of the inn's rooms. It is absolutely beautiful. From the living room area you can watch the boats go by and watch the bridge go up and down. As you may have read in other posts, there is a short blast that sounds when the bridge is being lifted. My husband and I both jumped the first time it went off but we barely noticed the remainder of the time. Plus we thought it was part of the charm of being on the water. We also never heard the alarm in the evening or night. Parking is free staying here in a large lot with plenty of room. A hot commodity in a town like this. There is cable and a dvd player that we utalized on nights we stayed in and there is a video store right around the corner. We had a sitting room, bed area, convenience kitchen that we used alot because we ate lunch on the deck every afternoon and a HUGE bathroom with jacuzzi tub. The highlight for me by a long shot. Only two little ideas for improvment from me. The beds should be king. We knew they were going to be queen beds and it was no big deal because we sleep in a queen at home, but this bed seemed even smaller than ours. Maybe it's the deep mattresses, but a king would definitely add to the luxury. Also, we had a problem with teenagers hanging out right outside our room. There is a sign for quiet after 8 on the dock so we never had a problem with that, but if we were in our room reading or watching tv we could hear them and it was a little of a disturbance. One that you will not find in any of the other rooms in the inn. Overall, neither of these things detracted from our overall experience. Near great food, shopping, and main Mystic attractions I think this is a wonderful place to stay on a long or short getaway! On a final note, May is by far one of the best times for visit Mystic if you can do it. Sweater weather, in the sixties on the water, but light traffic and you don't have to fight the crowds. In July I think this town in more of a chore than a vacation.

My husband and I just returned from a 3 night stay at the Steamboat Inn. I decided to stay here after the reviews from trip advisor. I decided against another local inn for the very same reasons. We enjoyed our stay! The location is perfect. Our room, the Valiant, was a new room located right on the waterfront. It had a private entrance right on the dock of the Mystic River, with wonderful river views and a view of the Mystic draw bridge. Our room was the only one with a private dockside entrance. Our room and the Inn was very clean and inviting. The staff was friendly. The continental breakfast was yummy with freshly baked muffins. It was nice to be able to walk to local restaurants. Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Auarium are both minutes away. Mystic is a charming and quaint little village. One draw back was the late night foot traffic on the dock, which was right outside our room. Our room was located right next to a metal staircase that lead up to neighboring apartments. We were not there in season, so I can imagine that it could be noisy in the summer. I would stay here again, but would ask for a quiet room. We had a relaxing and enjoyable stay at the Steamboat Inn.

  • Liked — The new room.
  • Disliked — The noise and no fridge.

Perfect location, everything is in walking distance.

Sweet staff.

We stayed in room 8, HUGE room, wish it had a gas fireplace, and people walk by the room at all hours, because it is on the boardwalk and closest to the draw bridge which during the summer season goes up and down once an hour, so beware if you are a light sleeper....

If I had to go again I would stay in room 2, The mystic room, nice view of the water, inside the building with easy access to the common room.

The only suggestion I would have is instead of sherry and cookies which no one eats, they should have a wine and cheese hour, it brings more of the patrons into the common room to mingle.

Resturants to suggest: crab cakes at Bravo Bravo & The Paker Inn which has the best calamari ever not to mention their own wine selection.

  • Disliked — people walking by the room......

It's taken me a while to get around to writing this - but the experience I had in Oct. 06 at the Steamboat is fresh in my mind.

My partner and I celebrated our honeymoon in New England, beginning our trip in Mystic at the Steamboat. We stayed in the Kathleen room, which has a wonderful view of the river, and two big rooms that made it easy for one person to wake up early, have coffee and let the other person sleep.

Great managers, very friendly. Location of hotel is perfect, right in town.

Breakfast was great - homemade granola, muffins, and basic fare.

We'll be going back this summer!

Having lived in Mystic, we always wondered what it would be like to spend an evening in the Steamboat Inn. Now that we are in Niantic, and pining for Mystic, we decided this year to go there for Valentine's Day. You couldn't ask for a nicer, more cheerful staff. We chose Room #1, right in front, and were able to keep an eye on the river we love so much and travel frequently on our boat. Off to Bravo Bravo for dinner...a terrible disappointment, for the second time in a row. They "forgot" to order my meal, so complimented me with a glass of God forsaken white wine. Next time, Anthony J's, which has never failed us. We found it very quiet inside the Inn, even though they had quite a few visitors. It's wonderful to have a cheerful kitchen right there, with hot water for tea, coffee, etc. I loved the breakfast, not being a person who needs bacon every single day. Lots of good bread, bagels, hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt, cereal. We came home relaxed and happy about our getaway choice. Looking forward to going again.

A wonderful inn located on the Mystic River. The room overlooked the river with a real working fireplace, Each room is individually decorated. Located in town. Expanded continental breakfast included in price. We ate dinner at the Oyster Company, near the Inn. Good food, also on the waterfront.
