“Charmingly Average”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

We had an early dinner at The Ancient Mariner. It is a charming restaurant, with dark woods and soft lights and comfortable seating. The menu is quite extensive. The food, however, was just average and the service, although following all the steps in the 'good service manual' was robotic. Like many restaurants, we felt a sense of urgency to leave, with the bill presented before we'd finished our last bite.

“Terrible Experience”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

My family and i were in Mystic recently and had dinner reservations at the Ancient Mariner. I understand it is summer and the restaurant was crowded. It started with them squeezing 6 of us into a 4 person booth. When we asked to be moved the rather abrupt hostess said it was impossible. After 15 min waiting for a waitress the air conditioning vent above us starting leaking and again we were told they could not move us. Needless to say we ordered quickly and ate our mediocre food and left. A sad ending to a great day.

“Always well worth the money”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

Food here has been consistently good every time we visit Mystic.
The stuffed lobster is to die for. Wonderful.
Fish and chips are good also just ask them to go light on the batter, sometimes they go a little crazy with it.
Food vs price is GREAT. And service is always great.

“Sumtuous food in a subdued setting”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

Ancient Mariner features dining and a bar in a subdued, dark wood paneled, carpeted setting. Hosts offer pleasant greetings and are prompt in seating guests. Daily menus feature salad, seafood, and meat specials. The menu is extensive, from soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers appetizers, light fare to well-prepared entrees. All dishes are reasonable priced, and are served in ample portions. I ordered a BLT Angus beef burger on a delicious brioche bun (making the eating possible to the last bite), which came with hand cut fries and the freshest, tastiest cole slaw. Others ordered fish sandwich specials which were fresh, fried haddock (another had flounder) also served on brioche buns with a hearty consistency; both had a tasty cole slaw. Our youngest ordered Mac and Cheese from a children's menu, and it was a tasty breaded recipe baked hot. Our waitress was professional, understated, and attentive without being intrusive. We will go back just adults to savor the larger dishes and inviting wine and drink selection others enjoyed.
