At first glance, Olde Mistick Village looks like so many other tourist shopping villages, where all the stores sell the same souvenirs. But don't make that mistake and pass it by. Sure, there's an ample supply of fudge and popcorn and tee shirts, but there are also a lot of great specialty shops that you won't necessarily find in a mall or outlet shopping village. The Toy Soldier is a fantastic toy store, stocked with everything from princess gear for little girls to authentic tin soldiers for grown-up boys. Imagine is a 60s time warp, and there's even a store specializing in Scandinavian delicacies. The Franklin General Store has a great colllection of local books and New England-made pottery, and the Army/Navy surplus store is always busy. But our favorite thing to do is grab a few bags of food from the Scandinavian shop and feed the ducks in the pond behind the little church. We saw new hatchlings a couple of weeks ago, and they're growing fast. Bestemor, the Scandinavian shop, sells duck food for 75 cents a bag, and all the proceeds go to a local food pantry. The ducks appreciate it, and so do the folks who use the food pantry.
