“The chef at Winvian is a winner!”
Reviewed August 26, 2011

I was very impressed by the Chef at Winvian, Chris Eddy. The food was excellent, farm to table fresh, nicely presented with good, informed service. We had a tasting menu twice and both were very nice. His sweetbreads and pigeon are some of the best I've had in the States. Wine selection is adequate. The rooms are whimsical. We stayed in Greenhouse - a lovely suite with sunshine and views of the forest. Privacy was reasonable. Room was nicely appointed, with steam shower and Jacuzzi. Amenities adequate although sparse (had to request but received bath salts and soap). Housekeeping was a bit lackluster, with dust bunnies and dirt on the floor that didn't move during our visit. Beautiful grounds with nice walks possible; it would have been nice to have a trail connection to the adjacent White Memorial Forest. Excellent service and well trained, pleasant young staff.

Recently returned from a blissful 26 hours at the Winvian. The guest services are just what you would expect from a Relais & Chateau property: a manager met us at the parking lot upon arrival, fireplace lit & hot bath ran without asking, & gracious hospitality throughout.

The property is absolutely beautiful, & the cottages are jaw dropping. We originally reserved the Treehouse, but stayed at the Woodlands after touring several of the cottages. (Also saw Camping, Industry, & Music.) It was even larger than it appeared on the website, & I believe that every cottage is actually not done justice through pictures. Each one was more magnificent in person than online. The bathroom was absolutely heavenly- soaking in the sunken tub w/ a full view of the trees was like bathing in the forest!

Had a delightful afternoon kayaking & had also planned for a sunrise hot-air balloon ride. Unfortunately, the weather didn't permit this. We spent the morning at the Spa instead, getting couples' treatments in the Forty Winks Suite. Delightful!

Chef Eddy's food was superb! We did a tasting menu for my husband's birthday & enjoyed every course. The next day, Chef Eddy invited us to stroll the vegetable garden & taste the different herbs- a true 'farm to table' experience!

Less than 2 hours from NYC, this is definitely an ideal destination to get away from the bustle of city life & be pampered in luxury. We will surely return for another weekend of relaxation & leisure.

Room Tip: Ask for a tour of available cottages beforehand

I hope this place succeeds because it is unique! We travelled mid-week ala carte on an Amex upgrade program, which was a terrific value, and felt like a reasonable, though still expensive, amount to pay for a special cottage (we stayed in Stone).

The cottages are imaginative, spacious and fun. The real highlight of a trip here is the food, which is nothing short of spectular (whoever gave the food mediocre reviews must have been there when the chef was out of town). The restaurant overlooks a large kitchen garden and nearly everything is locally sourced. The bread was fresh, the pasta was homemade and out of this world, the steak was fantastic, the mint-cuccumber sorbet was fabulous. And the homemade terrines, the cheeses, the desserts - all wonderful and memorable. Dinner service was attentive and warm. We sat outside on the upstairs porch and loved it.

This is a very pretty property, with unique and spacious themed cottages. The spa is very nice, but not especially memorable. It is hard to understand why a pool wasn't a priority from the start, since there is no appealing swimming nearby -- to succeed at these prices, at least an outdoor pool is sheer necessity for summer guests, and i have to add, the resort wasn't nearly full -- a bad sign in mid-july. No hot tubs at the spa either, as far as I know -- odd for a four seasons resort, especially one without a pool. I would think that a tennis court would be useful too. The work-out room was only adequate, not wildly inviting. The area around Litchfield is pretty, but not as lively as the Berkshires -- more to do at the resort would be welcomed.

We have had recognition and corporate retreats at some of the best destinations in the World. Our stay at Winvian compared to the best. The accommodations were spectacular. The whimsy but first class cottages wowed everyone, and being in the hospitality business ourselves we are not an easy crowd to please. The beds were comfortable, the sheets and towels soft, the pillows just right and the bathrooms exceptional.

The setting is also beautiful. The cottages, Spa and other buliding are placed about this 100 acre farm tastefully and in a fashion that offers appropriate privacy and yet convenience.

Then there is the food. Chef Eddy is one of the finest we have encountered. From breakfast to box lunches to delicious dinners, there was nothing that did not please the palate. Paulo knows his wines and his recommendations were excellent.

The spa is a beautifully designed buidling and the treatments were first class. The only thing missing is a pool.

However, what really put our stay over the top was the quality of the staff. They are well trained and professional. But they are also just nice natural people who clearly get a thrill out of pleasing guests and making their experience A+. It is obvious from the personal handwritten arrival note from owner, Maggie Smith, that this family owned business is run hands on. Her daughter, Heather, and son, Win were present and very responsive to our needs.

Finally, since we were there for business, I should point out that the Board Room and the equipment was perfect for our needs.

While we rarely go to the same retreat a second time, we might make an exception in the case of Winvian. I know that several of our executives plan to go back on their own.

Room Tip: It all depends on your whim that day. There is not a bad cottage, View them on the web.

After our recent visit, I must admit we are in utter shock and disbelief that this hotel/resort has the distinction it does! After spending a lifetime traveling the world and staying at mostly Ritz Carlton, LHW and Relais & Chateaux destinations, our question is who did the Winvian pay off?! How they can be recognized as Diamond status or Relaix & Chateaux is completely beyond me. Never in my life have I heard the word “no” more times then during our visit. Upon arrival the cottage was completely filthy and pretty much stayed that way for its entirety. The Housekeeping staff has to drive a caravan from cottage to cottage, so I assume having to lug in and out all their cleaning equipment just adds to their laziness. Had to call the front desk for simple items such are replenishing toiletries or asking for a sewing kit. Couldn’t find a shoehorn, anywhere. And these requests took hours to satisfy. Albeit a la carte or inclusive, the food is absolutely horrendous. Breakfast was re-heated bacon and sausage with pre-made crepe style eggs that would be filled in the morning with vegetables and cheese, folded, heated and served. Absolutely incredible but true as I accidentally found my way into the kitchen one night and saw the pre-made supplies with my own eyes! At maximum capacity this place is like 30 people - they can’t make fresh breakfast? Went out on Saturday evening to Community Table (Excellent establishment, top food!) with a prominent member of the Litchfield Hills community. We decided to return to Winvian for coffee and dessert at 10PM and was told no! On Saturday! Again, confirmed with my own eyes, the kitchen was full of chocolate desserts as well. No menus anywhere with no prices listed; when you order any snack or drink do be surprised at your bill upon checkout. They could just make up these prices, as you have no idea what you are paying for what. Never in my life have I come across this service. Considering the options in the Litchfield Hills for food and stay, I strongly recommend to pass right by this one. The Mayflower is so much far superior and it’s cheaper! The owner of the Winvian seems nice enough and made it clear the place is just taking losses. In my opinion the only thing it has to offer is its location, and that’s why it stays afloat with the summer wedding business. Which also makes for unpleasant stay for other guests. Overall, fire the entire staff, especially the hotel manager who is never there. Everyone is extremely combative and you don’t have a fighting chance in getting the simplest requests. I would love to know how many repeat customers they really do have! Just completely unacceptable for the money.

Dear "Mr-Sinjin-Smythe",
I will refer to you by your pseudonym and will keep your true identity confidential as is the Winvian way. You and I are both keenly aware of your absolutely appalling behavior while staying at my resort. As the daughter of the owner I know for a fact the conversation you claim to have had with her is a complete fabrication, as is this entire review. Our supposedly "lazy" housekeeping team was able to clean the cottage in which you stayed proving they are nothing but miracle workers. Our myriad repeat guests and awards of distinction speak for themselves. I will not waste one more moment responding to this slanderous review.

We visited Winivian to celebrate our 10th anniversary 2 years ago. Since Trip Advisor does not have the scroll down option farther than a year I had to pick the last available option.
The reason why we chose this place was that our honeymoon was celebrated in India 10 years ago travelling through houseboat, a resort with caveroom, tree house and a cabin on its own tiny island. Our plan was to relive those exact footsteps but with 2 small kids we did the next best thing and do some research.
Luckily for us just 4 hours of drive to CT and a unique resort set in the heart of wooded area is this gem of a place which had all that we wanted and more. Upon our arrival we were given a tour of all properties. Immediately we changed our mind from the cave cottage style cabin into the green room cabin because it was exactly how we envison fun style living to be.

We stayed there for 4 nights and changed everday helping us to experience different experiences without having to do much! They happily shifted our luggage, crib and other items without a fuss. They made every morning, noon and night special. Whether it was helping a picnic basket in the meadows, adapting to our vegetarian options. Providing our kids with games or the complimentary mercedes suv to just move around locally. We also used the bicycles that were put outside our rooms.

We also stayed in charter oak, tree house and were thrilled with the joie de vivre of exploring and constant sense of discovery. Our kids were lot in their world of story telling, camping and board game activities that kept them involved all through. Our daughter who dreams of growing up to be an architect had new found respect to the possibilities of what minds can achieve. The feeling of being somewhere while being nowhere is expertly achieved while supplying us with homegrown salads, delicious pasta dishes and breathtaking soups! There has to be special mention of the deserts that the kitchen can whip up. My husband ordered our anniversary cake and it has to be told that it was as grand as a wedding cake with all the decorations and hoopla that we felt humbled to enjoy. It was a masterpiece.

The front desk smelled of fresh peonies, there is a sense of style with classic touches here. There is peace. If you want to take your family to middle of country but still need wifi, good food and AMAZING bathrooms with sauna and high class showers then look no further!

The furniture, views, beds and overall ambience is impressive considering that which ever cabin you are there is a genuine soul of that theme. Even though all of these cabins are not that far from each other.

Room Tip: Take a tour before you make your mind.

This was our second stay at Winvian; and definitely NOT our last. We celebrated a birthday and stayed one night. The Property is so unique. Each cottage a wholly different experience. This year we chose to stay in the Woodlands (last year the Beaver). The staff is so pleasant and have the incredible knack to be around when you need them but otherwise we felt like we were alone, just the two of us, which is EXACTLY how we wanted to celebrate the 24 hours of escape from reality. The spa and particuclarly the couples massage was (once again) exceptional. I highly recommend it. The hotel was so accomodating with our Kosher dietary requests. They made us feel comfortable and relaxed from the moment of check in until the GWB (hours after we left for home) and even assisted (repeatedly) with my ineptitude at maintaining a strong bed-side fire in the cottage. No request was too great or too small. It was a pleasure meeting one of the owners, Winthrop, while chilling in the Great House having a drink (fireside, of course) and playing a game of pool. We can't wait to celebrate future special ocassions here again...
