“What was that stuff they called Chicken?”
Reviewed January 15, 2014

First time eating here... ordered kungpao chicken; my date ordered chicken and vegs. The chicken had the texture of balls of fat. I think they processed chicken scraps mixed with about 75% fat... Tastless and gross. Told the mgr how awful it was and she just shrugged and walked away.

“Very Interesting Menu, Reasonable Prices”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

This unassuming restaurant is a real find, and if you're traveling through New England, it's not very far off of I-95. We live in a town near Milford, CT and over the years we've tasted over 75 of the dishes offered by Lao Sze Chuan, never disappointed. While the inexpensive lunch (soup, spring roll, main dish, dessert, tea) is mostly Cantonese, the regular menu has a broad range of interesting preparations from various parts of China. If you can, go with a bunch of people so you can share many different items.

“Very nice Chinese food in a small town”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

Unbelievable to have this place in such a small town like Milford. The place is also very small with minimal decoration. But they served good Chinese food, especially the vegetable. Price is reasonable.

“Went early: Food AND Service were great!”
Reviewed June 22, 2013

Don't go here for chop suey: This is the real thing. We started with a well-prepared dish of pickled jelly fish with minced scallion sauce. The strips of jelly fish were nicely dressed in the green, smooth sauce,—different from the usual coating of sesame oil—and quite delicious. An order of "stuffed tofu crepe with black mushrooms and bamboo shoots," happily turned out to be tofu skin and an emphasis on black mushrooms. Our main courses included a wonderfully flavored braised duck casserole, an appropriately spicy Ma Po Tofu, and a fresh and tasty sautéed green that I think was Chinese spinach—ask what the freshest green is that day, and it will arrive! Our waitress was sweet and attentive—but we got there early and before the place got busy.

“Authentic Sze Chuan Food and Classic Decor”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

Came in after a bike ride for lunch at the recommendation of a Japanese friend who swears it's the best Asian food outside of NYC.

It didn't disappoint.

We were limited in what we could try since there was only two of us. So we ordered two different "set lunch" combos. I got the hot and sour soup, white rice with glazed beef and garlic green beans. He had the won ton soup, brown rice and Sze Chuan Chicken. Everything was very good and based on a decade spent in Asia, I'd call it truly authentic. I can't wait to go back with a few more people to share more of the spicier and regional Sze Chuan dishes.

The decor is classic, Mainland China. Very clean, bleached white tablecloths on round tables with classic landscape scrolls decorating plain white walls. I felt like i was 20 miles outside Beijing in the 90's.

As for the service, I'd also call it authentic Mainland Chinese. Yes, the staff looks very recently "off the boat". But while their English may not be perfect, perhaps we should appreciate the fact that they are serving really good, authentic Sze Chuan food for half of what it costs for the mediocre Catonese food found in most Chinese restaurants. A really good, three course lunch for two very hungry guys was less than $20 with tax and tip.

If you want slick decor, fast service and snappy, pan-asian food in over sized bowls, try P.F. Chang's and leave this place to those who don't mind waiters who can't speak perfect English.

As my Auntie Dot always says, "All the more for us".
