We eat here often -- the food is just wonderful. Order a Masala Dosa for a savory potato mixture inside a giant crepe, or Vegetable Pullav for a dense rice dish similar to a paella.

“fantastic fast food”
Reviewed November 30, 2006

Udupi Bhavan in Middletown, CT, is a great little place. It is simply decorated, sometimes noisy, and has no table service - you order and pick up at the counter. The menu has some standard north Indian curries and items like samosa, but the real stars on offer are the amazing south Indian snack and lite meal items: dosa (crepe with potato filling and sauces), idli (rice cake), uttapam (pancake), lemon rice, tamarind rice, and many more. Everything is delicious. Some items are spicy hot and/or a little salty. The staff are fast and friendly, the kitchen is on view via a big window, the place is clean, and overal highly recommended! I live in town and eat here often.

“Terrific Authentic Indian Food”
Reviewed July 29, 2006

"Udupi Bhavan Indian Vegetarian Restaurant"
[--]

I dined here last night and enjoyed a thoroughly delicious, filling meal. This (East) Indian restaurant is a completely vegetarian "hole in the wall", one of several small restaurants in a strip mall. It is not a tourist trap, and it survives on the repeat business of loyal locals.

It operates in a curiously hybrid manner similar to a mall food court: You look stand in line, looking at the printed menus, and then place your order at the counter, where it's relayed to the kitchen, and you're given a number as you pay. Then, as the various courses (appetizer, main dish, dessert, etc) are ready, they repeatedly call your number and you go back to the counter to fetch your food, piecemeal fashion.

There is no decor. You will eat on formica tables, with plastic forks and paper plates and plastic cafeteria trays. And on the night I was there, at 7pm, it was PACKED with patrons, who appeared to be a mix of caucasians, asians, and others, some in traditional dress, some seeming to be on a romantic date, some with families, and all enjoying the delicious food. I must confess that although I've eaten Indian food from San Francisco to New York, I'm woefully unable to spell or name most of the dishes that I ate. But I can say that the samosas were terrific, the paratha yummy, the soup and roti (?) equally tasty. The basmati rice was well prepared. Most appetizers were priced from $2 to $4, the main courses were $5 to $7. Quite reasonably priced. I would definitely go here again. Portions were ample.

If you're looking for some cheap, delicious, authentic Indian food, and don't mind eating in a starkly un-decorated, completely tacky dining room, this is the place for you.

Finding the place could be a challenge, but Mapquest[--] correctly maps it. You need to start in downtown Middletown, on Main Street, and travel South. Main St. becomes Saybrook Rd. You cross over the highway (there is no interchange) and travel up the hill. The Udupi Bhavan is in a small plaza on your right, after you pass the big Stop-n-Shop grocery plaza.
