“Don't expect service if you book on Hotwire or Priceline”
Reviewed July 18, 2012

First, the positives. We found the rooms to be clean if a bit dated. There was the normal wear you would expect for a room not updated for 5 years or more, but the room was definitely clean. The bed was very comfortable. I prefer a firm bed and my girlfriend prefers it to be softer, and we were both satisfied with the bed.

Now the bad part - we arrived late on a Friday night, and were greeted by a friendly representative at the front desk. When she pulled up our reservation she made a point of mentioning it was booked on Hotwire. When we asked how many beds were in the room, she said there were 2. We politely asked if we could have a room with one King bed, and were told that she couldn't change it, because Hotwire determines the room type when the reservation is booked and if they change it, the rate changes and they can't do that.

Between my girlfriend and me, we've booked over two dozen reservations through Hotwire and Priceline, and we've never encountered this. Now, I'm fully aware that there's no guarantee that our room will have a certain number of beds when we book through Hotwire, but when I check in to a hotel that from the parking lot doesn't even look half full, I figure a simple request like that can be accommodated. I mentioned to the clerk that the rates were identical on their website earlier that day, and she told me that if I wanted a King room I should have booked it through their website. I realized that I wasn't going to win the argument that night, so we went to our room and slept in separate beds.

The following morning, I returned to the front desk and spoke with another clerk, who gave me the same song and dance regarding the rates being different. To make a long story short, I ended our discussion by telling him we felt as if we were being treated as second class citizens because we booked through Hotwire. He loudly disagreed, but I had had enough and left the front desk. 10 minutes later, he called us in the room to let us know that his manager "had approved a change to a king room without penalty THIS TIME". I thanked him very much and we switched rooms.

The moral of this long story is, don't come here with a reservation on a cut rate website and expect good service, because it will be non-existent.

Room Tip: Don't book on Priceline or Hotwire!

The Four Points Sheraton is hidden from the main road, but has easy access to the highway which is a plus for travelers. Despite its dated "feel" it is clean and the employees are friendly and helpful. The pool area is nothing to write home about, but it serves the purpose when traveling with young children. Hotel patrons are greeted courteously and requests are answered promptly. It is a twenty minute drive from downtown New Haven, but I would still recommend it for anyone looking for a quiet and clean resting point.

As many other reviewers have pointed out the hotel is quite dated with an 80s feel, there was a hint of stale smoke in the room I stayed in and the clientele in the hotel and adjacent bar is perhaps not the most glamorous but overall the positives outweigh the negatives. The bed is comfortable with a big bed, it's got decent facilities with a coffeemaker in the room, free wi-fi, there is a gym and swimming pool and the restaurant downstairs offered a great breakfast buffet. The only thing I missed was a safe in the room. Staff was also very friendly and helpful and the hotel is conveniently located a short drive away from the highway.

Went with my husband and small daughter to the Four Points by Sheraton in Meriden, CT for a five night trip. Was astonished that a Sheraton Hotel was so dated! Television was of the small boxed type (not a flat screen), which tells you the rest about the room we were in. Television channels were very limited (approximately 15-20 channels -- that being generous). Carpet could have used a steam cleaning. Everything needed an update including the indoor pool, which thankfully, was heated. Thought the the hotel was pricey for what we got. If the price was in the $65-$75/nt range, it would have been acceptable. All-in-all, I'd call the stay there: AVERAGE, at best.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your experience at the hotel and thank you for choosing to stay at our hotel for five nights. Your feedback is extremely important to us and it will help us improve our operation. We are currently working with Starwood Hotels and ownership to implement facility upgrades that will address many of the concerns that you shared. We will hopeful be able to offer an upgraded room package that includes flat screen HD televisions and additional channels. Additionally, we are hoping to replace gust room and corridor carpeting in the near future as well. In the mean time the hotel is having carpets cleaned on a quarterly basis. This is to ensure that our carpets are the cleanest possible. The last cleaning so in June so we will check to make sure that we did not miss the room you stayed in. Thank you for your feedback and we hope to see you again!

Sincerely

We stayed there while drove to NYC and back to Boston in the same day. We found a coupon in the rest area food court for $60 and it was worth it! It has restaurant, fitness room and indoor swimming pool on site! Great for this price. Not sure we would stay there for $100... Very big king bed room!
