Wyndham Hawthorne Suites in Meriden, Connecticut and Expedia have failed to honor a confirmed reservation that was made two months before. We had a confirmed four-night reservation for a queen suite with a pullout couch bed to accommodate two adults and a five year old. We were given two separate rooms diagonally across the hall from each other, with one bed in each. Management said they were having trouble because many of their staff “have trouble with English,” and they had no other available rooms. We contacted Expedia for assistance to resolve the situation at the hotel or book us somewhere else. Expedia’s call center was of no help: an Expedia representative who did not speak or understand English clearly. She put us on hold to call the hotel and after 16 minutes she simply repeated what the hotel said. We asked for a supervisor but finally gave up after 12-14 minutes of being on hold. We were eventually given a queen suite the second day, but room was dilapidated and smelled like old cheese. The hotel advertised a buffet breakfast that specified on our confirmation but only offered a packed muffin and child's bottle of low quality juice, and limited availability of coffee.

Dear Mr. Rick,

I am so sorry to see that you were not satisfied with your stay. I remember checking you in with your wife and your 5 year old boy whom I recall being excited to go visit the Mystic aquarium. I apologize if you thought it was the staff that I was referring to. What I meant to say was we had a group in-house who did not speak English too well and had to extend their stay due to lack of communication. Hence we did not have the room type you booked and had to give you 2 rooms for the price of one.

You're correct about us currently offering only Muffins, Granola bars, Bottled juices & Coffee for breakfast. We do offer coffee till breakfast time and then there are also coffee makers available in all guest rooms with extra coffee packets provided upon request. I do apologize for the breakfast buffet mis-print and I hope you agree that we did compensate for it by paying for your breakfast for the 3 days that you stayed with us. When it is our mistake we do try our best to compensate in any way we possibly can.

As you might have noticed; we're currently in the process of getting renovated. As part of those renovations we will be able to offer all of ours guests a full hot breakfast. It is hard for us to control the content that are posted on other reservation websites that are not affiliated with Wyndham.com; however we have requested the site in question to remove the mis-print so as not to mislead our guests.

Thank you again for choosing to stay with us and I hope my response will change your mind to try us out again during your next trip.

We’ve stayed here whenever our travels brought us into the Greater Hartford/ New Haven area, going back prior to when it was a Candlewood Suites before the change to Hawthorn Suites. The hotel has excellent accessibility from the highway, which we really appreciate after a long travel day. Tania at the front desk and the housekeeping staff always do their best to accommodate us when we’re there. Friendly and helpful, they treat everyone like family. They understand what good customer service means. The free washer/dryer laundry is a huge plus for us.

However, the facility is looking tired and while the housekeeping staff does their best to keep the rooms and common areas clean, the facility is in need of a refresh, and as we saw from our trip last week, those much needed renovations have begun.

In spite of the fact that their rates have significantly gone up since changing names to Hawthorn Suites, the cable TV and wireless internet service degraded when they switched providers. The previous satellite cable TV provider was not high def, but it did have a large assortment of options, including many family friendly channels. We could always catch a good late night movie. The new provider is HD, with far fewer choices and drops all of the HBO offerings and instead substitutes channels with an ugly macabre offering. The new provider constantly goes out of service, regardless of the weather conditions.

The internet service has likewise degraded to a response level expected of dial-up service.

Both the cable TV and internet issues are known to the hotel management, as they made many excuses to us about the problems with networking, and the number of devices each guest now brings in to the rooms, and the failure of their provider’s network servers. The problems are well known to them, and did not occur under the previous hotel badging. They have no excuse.

Dear Barb_Jim,

Thank you for your review about your recent stay at the Hawthorn Suites. I am glad to see that you're noticing all the new changes we're bringing to our hotel. Part of that change was to upgrade to HD channels from Non-HD. As part of that new package we did lose some channels but this was a corporate based decision and out of our control.

You're also correct in mentioning that we are aware of the TV & Internet issues that happened over the weekend. Please know that once we're made aware of any concern that a guest brings up to us we do attend to it in a timely manner. Sometimes it does it longer to resolve issues that are not controlled by us. We did order a new receiver for our satellite that has fixed the problem of the channels going in and out. We have also fixed the internet issue and are in the process of moving vendors. As you mentioned in your survey this used to be the candlewood suites; so as part of that the previous management company did have some agreements in place with vendors and/or providers which are not always easy to get out of. None the less our guests have spoken and Wyndham has heard it loud and clear.

We're definitely changing what needs to be changed and it is happening quick. I would not want to have dissatisfied guests as that is not what Wyndham is about. Thank you for your patience and your review as it always helps us keep getting better.
