Saint Aybert Church
Reviewed August 23, 2012

Most of the art deco churches and buildings by master architect Henri lacoste are located in rather remote cities and villages, making it not always that easy to visit them. The art deco church of Bléharies is such an example. The rural village is situated on an old trail leading to Santiago de Compostella.

Colourful ceramics with palmtrees cover the main façade. Inside the exoticism continues with the apostles in the stained glass windows in the presbytery not being white, but dark skinned. The many triangular windows in the roof are filled with stained glass too and have stylized images of saints. The pulpit in polished marbrite is a composition of abstract shapes and rests on a globe. Very special.

Henri Lacoste was also responsible for the town hall next to the church, thus creating an interesting and homogeneous square. Worth a (big) detour.
