“Will be back for the Paella!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

I had takeout so I have no clue on the service but my order was ready right away. I had the mofongo and the house paella. The paella was outstanding! Tasty without the rice or sauce being overdone or overwhelming. I loved the fact that I can taste the saffron in it. The seafood in it was fresh and cooked well. The mofongo got a little soggy likely because it was hot and was put in a takeout container so I would likely have a different experience if I ate it in the restaurant itself. Overall I would say I would come back to try more of their food!

What a wonderful meal in a relaxing environment. Each dish was meticulously prepared and presented. For those of you with food allergies, the chef and staff are attentive and can address any special needs.

“Outstanding Spanish Bistro in Manchester”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

I just discovered an outstanding restaurant in Manchester Connecticut. Outstanding, not only because the food is excellent, but also because it captures the essence of Latino Cooking while infusing it with the subtle palate of Mainland Spain, presumably Galicia, Chef Suso's native home. The results are outstanding. While the restaurant is refreshingly located in a working-class neighborhood, it has the makings and character of a genuine European Bistro.

During our most recent visit we tried 'Papas Rellenas' (-imagine Mashed Potato balls stuffed with stewed beef and pork, rolled, and lightly fried); 'Mofongo Con Camarones' (-consisting of fried plantains cooked with onion and pork drippings, pressed into a wood mortar to form a hollow bowl, and stuffed with Shrimp cooked in Garlic Sauce); and 'Pernil' - quintessential Baked Ham spiced with Salt, Pepper, and Garlic that Puerto Ricans throughout the world love.

The Papas Rellenas were fantastic -light, savory, soft and crunchy at the same time. Meat stuffing was spiced perfectly bringing out the flavors of pork and beef simmered in light sauce with a hint of onion, garlic, olives, capers, and tomato. These came out accompanied with Onions and Greens dressed in signature Salsa Verde, that is also excellent unto itself.

Mofongo Con Camarones was done masterfully. Plantains were fried to light perfection, thus releasing the plaintain's signature fresh nutty taste. These were surrounded by medium size shrimp sauted in exquisite garlic sauce that could be consumed by itself as an exquisite soup. Shrimp was cooked to perfection -not rubbery, in perfect balance with garlic sauce and fried-plaintain's flavor. The dish's aroma was suggestive of fresh seafood by sea-side. -Marjoram, rosemary, lemon, capers, and thyme.

'Pernil' was unbelievable. Chef Suso -an endearing nickname for Jesuso, manages to capture the baked ham flavor that islanders love in his roasted pork leg while also infusing the softer palate of Mainland Spain in it. The result is a flavorful roasted Pernil brazen with tropical flavor along the edges and with softer spice-notes deeper in meat that falls off the bone and melts in one's mouth. As a combat veteran, I must categorize it as "Almost'-to-die-for'. If you can't find the time to travel to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, or Peru for this Entree, this is the place to have it in the Greater Hartford Area.

Presentation was impeccable from room decoration to plate. Food is presented on white dishes thus bringing out the colors and flavors of food. Atmosphere is intimate, casual and romantic. Service is unpretentious and very professional. Staff is friendly, attentive, and seemingly genuinely delighted that we enjoyed their native dishes. Value is high. The restaurant is ideal for having a fantastic meal, solo, or with peers, and, or to share with a special someone.

Chef Suso is a consummate Chef. His restaurant is precisely the kind of culinary treasure one dreams of finding in the midst of our towns, but are so rare. A great surprise indeed. While dining we learned of an upcoming dining event featuring Paella, Sangria, Spanish Beer, accompanied with traditional Spanish Guitar and Flamenco dance.

I highly recommend this restaurant to friends, family, associates, and foodies. We plan to come back many times. Perhaps we will meet there, I will be the guy with fancy white hair.

“new discovery”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2013

We got takeout from this little restaurant on Friday. There appears to be a growing coterie of very loyal local customers. One fellow who was waiting to be seated commented that he did not know that they offered takeout. He said he would be getting more meals there.
The appetizers we ordered were spectacular. The tuna empanadas had a light, tasty crust, and the filling was delicious. The ceviche was less spicy and tangy than I have had from Peruvian restaurants, but it was still excellent.
The main courses were good, but not as memorable as the appetizers. That is often the case with fine restaurants. My only real gripe was that some of the seafood in the paella was not as fresh as one would hope in a top flight restaurant.
