“We had a great weekend there”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

We just came back from a great weekend at the Tidewater Inn in Madison, CT. We had the Bushnell room, and the overall impression was very good, even though the place could use a little TLC, especially in the bathroom.

What made the entire stay exceptional was Victoria's qualities as an innkeeper. From the warm welcome, to the late afternoon cheese and wine in front of the fireplace to the delicious breakfast she made us feel welcome and "at home". She also provided excellent advice on restaurant choices and even made reservations for us. Thanks to her, it was a very memorable weekend for us.

Room Tip: The Bushnell room is directly by the front door and faces out to the street. It's door opens dir...

My husband and I chose the Tidewater Inn to celebrate our anniversary based on the excellent reviews on this sight and our experience exceeded our expectations. Victoria greeted us warmly, although she had lost electricity, she upgraded us to the cottage, since it had power. The cottage was absoutely lovely. Nicely decorated and clean. Large jacuzzi tub was a plus.
Victoria hosted a "candlelight" wine and cheese gathering in the late afternoon. She is as wonderful a person as she is a host. She gave us many useful tips on where to visit and dine. Her suggestion of the must see Gillette Castle was amazing. The breakfasts that Victoria prepared were both delicious and filling. We were pleasantly surprised with a dozen roses and a bottle of bubbly upon our return to the cottage after a day of sight seeing. We only were able to stay for two nights and wished we could stay for longer. By far, the best B&B we have stayed in during our 17 years of marriage!

I'm the planner in our family and my husband jokes that he'll mention that talent in my obituary. After our stay at the Tidewater Inn, he said it would be featured as one of my best choices. Our room - the Meigs - was small but made such good use of space. We had lots of drawer space which is a surprise in an Inn,plenty of closet space, good reading lamps, very comfortable bed with clean crisp linens and not too fussy. Victoria was everything you hope for in an innkeeper but don't always get. She gave great directions, had many ideas for sightseeing, and choices for restaurants. All of her advise was exactly right. She even directed us to a beautiful beach walk for our morning walk. We followed this with coffee in the lovely garden. I don't have enough time or space to write about the breakfasts. They were the best we've ever had in a B & B and were beautifully presented. Victoria uses fresh vegetables and fruits from local farmers for her fabulous breakfasts. My sister's room - the Madison suite - was large and had a refrigerator which had soft drinks and snacks. These amenities were available to the other rooms in a space in the hall. There were fresh baked good, coffee and tea available at all times. In the afternoon, Victoria served wine and cheese. All of these things made this Inn a great value. We're looking forward to a return visit next time we're in that area.

My boyfriend and I just returned from an absolute fantastic few days at the Tidewater. We traveled up to Madison to celebrate my birthday and I can say without hesitation that this was the best birthday I have ever had. Victoria, the innkeeper was so hospitable, helpful and welcoming and talk about a fantastic cook!! We woke on our first morning to a birthday basket outside of my door with a balloon, cake and card! When we asked Victoria for advice on a place to have dinner... not only did she recommend a place she called and made us a reservation. We have never felt so welcome and well taken care of! We had such a great time visiting with the other guests and just relaxing! The beaches were beautiful and quiet. It was the perfect romantic getaway!

I spent a few days at Tidewater Inn recently and really enjoyed the experience. I met a lot of nice people from various states also staying there, most of them repeat customers. The breakfast was fantastic and the room was clean and decorated beautifully. I would recommend the Tidewater Inn to anyone wanting a quiet, charming and relaxing place to stay in the Madison area. Victoria is a warm and caring individual well versed in the local area and history of Madison, CT. Looking forward to my next visit to this area.

Stay nowhere else in Connecticut, if you can help it - really! The Tidewater Inn does everything right.

The place itself is gorgeous in every detail of decorating and comfort. It's a trip to the most elegant facets of 19th century New England (and my son and I were last there for the Inn's lovely Christmas), but without any stuffiness. The rooms are to die for, too.

The place is owned by Victoria, and she has a way of creating a very personal experience without any hovering or intrusiveness. She's also the most amazing cook; there's no better breakfast in New England. And, you'll meet very interesting people around the elegant dining room table.

A word of caution: book early. This is not a place - especially in the summer - for spontaneously dropping in. The Tidewater fills up fast, as one would expect. So, do some planning if you want New England's best B&B experience.

Room Tip: They're all superb.

We have visited and spent time in some nice B&B Inns in the northeast and can say with conviction that this has been an all around wonderful place.

Our host, Victoria, treated us with genuine warmth and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived.

If you like antique tall four post trundle beds with comfortable mattresses, hot coffee and a wonderful breakfast served with not just a smile but also genuine conversation, this may just leave you with the same warm feelings we had.
