We used to live in a town near Hartford for many years and the First and Last was often our place to go when we wanted a great meal. When we moved to another state, we missed the atmosphere and the food and never found another restaurant quite like it. Our daughter recently started college in Hartford and we told her we'd take her there - it was amazing how little it has changed. The atmosphere was just as we remembered - full of lively talk and laughter. And the food was just as good. We started with a special salad of arugula, endive, bleu cheese, apples, pears and candied walnuts. It was perfectly dressed with a light, lemony concoction. My daughter had Rigatoni Bolognese which was delicious and the portion was huge - she took more than half of it home. I was delighted to see Chicken Stemperata still on the menu - bone in chicken pieces with olives, garlic and peppers. It was as good as I remembered from 17 years ago. We also had shrimp scampi which was fine - the shrimp were a bit overcooked and my husband didn't like the addition of capers - I did. And, of course we had to have bread pudding for dessert, even though we were all quite full. It was as crispy, tasty and satisfying as it was way back when. I'm thrilled she has another 4 years in Hartford - it was such a treat to go back to the First and Last again and to find the quality remaining as high as it always was. We will be back many more times!
