This one goes way back! I visit a lot of cemeteries, but this one goes back farther in history than any other I've been to. Many of the stones were unreadable, but many of them were, and they told great stories. Very well maintained, but yet not unnaturally so.

The history of Hartford is exciting. The Ancient Burying Ground makes that history feel more 'real'. The graves date from the early 17th century and are in various stages of decay. The 'death faces' engraved in most of the stones are really worth seeing. A brochure available at the site tells some of the fascinating stories of those buried below.

Check it out, well worth the trip and small enough to enjoy in less than one hour. Pre-revolutionary graves and in good condition.

Vern had several people noted on the Founder's Monument located in the Ancient Burying Ground, right downtown Hartford. It felt ancient for sure. A holy place of restless souls that left their lives in Europe for all reasons and came to rest in Hartford. The headstones have been refurbished in some cases in case they seem easily readable. We learned a hint for the less clear-shaving cream added and wiped down. Very effective. We located some family stones and just soaked in the history of the place and events that took place in this early town. No tours were available so we just looked around.

Go on times when they offer a tour. The stories of those interred are most fascinating. And there are over hundreds of bodies believed to be buried in the same area, unidentified!
