The Talbot Inn
Ranked #2 of 3 Ripley B&B and Inns

I booked The Talbot from Buy A Gift as a birthday present for my partner and the fact that the hotel was owned by Marco Pierre White made it more appealing, as we thought the food would be of a high standard. How disappointed we were with the very poor quality of the evening meal, most of which I had to leave. The continental breakfast was inadequate and the "fresh" fruit was anything but and looked as if it had been left on the table for weeks. Our room was very basic although the bed was comfortable. The whole hotel needs a lot of TLC and looked very tired. We will certainly not be returning there and would urge others to keep well away.

This hotel takes bookings over the phone and writes the details of your credit/debit cards (including the security number on the back) on paper, which is then left lying around to be stolen by thieves and used to take large amounts of money from your account. And apparently this is acceptable. I think not. As a by the by I am actually puzzled as to how any thief would know that any credit/debit details were left around.........something to think about! The hotel did not inform anyone in our party until several days after the burglary; absolutely disgusting, as prompt action would have avoided anyone having any money stole from their account,

We had booked in as we were attending the wedding of our niece and I have to say that this event was to a large extent ruined by this hotel. Firstly we had to deal with having our credit card details compromised and then with the hotel reneging on their previous promise to give complimentary rooms to all guests by way of compensation for the upset and inconvenience they caused by their negligence.

The room we stayed in had certainly seen better days, although I have to say the bed was comfortable. I have stayed in better Premier Inns for £29 per night and wish I had booked into one on that night.

The wedding was absolutely wonderful, although this was because we have a fantastic family and not because of anything the hotel provided. The drinks were totally overpriced even considering we were a captive audience and I understand from the men in our party, that the beer could have been better.

I would never stay at this hotel again and would advise others to avoid it also.

If you are happy to have your Credit /Debit Card details compromised along with your address, the 3 digit security number on the back of your card left in a public reception area, then stay here, if not avoid like the plague.

We too were part of the wedding party where our Debit Card details were left and then stolen from this negligent hotel. We however never received a call to say that our card had been compromised and it was only when I called them, they agreed this was indeed the case.

The father of the bride had numerous meetings with the management and a list of guests whom would receive complimentary rooms was agreed. Imagine the stress and embarrassment of having to ring all your guests to tell them that the hotel has kept this sort of information in a public area, hand written and now not only can your card be used but whist attending the wedding your house may also be at risk of being burgled.

On the day most of the staff were unfriendly, uninterested and unhelpful and too young. The very young girl who announced the arrival of the Bride & Groom into the wedding breakfast announced the wrong name Mr & Mrs Connor was given instead of Mr & Mrs Owen, when my husband quickly pointed out the mistake she just shrugged her shoulders. The food was passable but not plentiful, my 8yr old daughter was given the adult menu as I was told they had not been informed that she was a child, once the starter had gone out they then informed me, they had made a mistake & a childs menu was offered but by this point I didn't see the point in changing it.

The room itself Room No.3 was unclean the toilet was dirty, the carpet in the bathroom has ground in dirt throughout and there are hand prints on the wall to the left of the bed.

Breakfast was poor and give the black pudding a miss as this gave both my husband and I a runny tummy, not great when you have over an hours drive back home. Our daughter ate the same less the black pudding and was fine. They ran out of bread for toast and when we requested it was told they'd sent someone to the shop to buy it, we never saw any again.

On checking out we were told due to the vast amount of confiscated alcohol they had taken off guests, they were reneging on the offer of a complimentary room and have since debited my account. This vast amount comprised of 2 empty wine bottles, 1 box of fosters and 1 bottle of Magners It is obvious that this hotel is not upstanding of their word and never had any intention to make amends for their gross misconduct regarding peoples personal data.

Unless you want your daughter/ sons wedding spoilt beyond comprehension or you feel the urge to have your personal data out there for everyone to use, learn for our dear friends mistake, drive on by and keep going.

Pleasant stay at The Talbot,
Rooms clean and tidy but I found the bar area a bit grubby. Tables in the bar area very sticky.
Restaurant lovely,food good,
good service considering there was a wedding party also staying at the hotel . However there was bedding left at the bottom of the stairs when we arrived and was still there when we left the next day... not a good look for the hotel I'm afraid... All said though that is not much of a bugbare so not too bad at all.

Dreadful place! DO NOT PROVIDE YOUR CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD DETAILS TO THIS HOTEL.

Our friends’ daughter chose this venue for their wedding and we booked a room overnight because it was too far for us to travel in a day. 2 weeks before the wedding we had a message left on our answerphone saying that there had been a burglary at the hotel and our credit card details had been compromised. They took three days to inform us, by which time over £800 had been taken from our credit card.

It transpired that the staff had kept written copies of all the pre-booking details in a folder, which was kept on the reception desk. This folder had been taken. Having telephoned the hotel to express our annoyance at their incompetence, as a gesture of goodwill, we were offered our pre-booked room as complimentary.

On arrival at the day of the wedding, the room was not available as it had not been cleaned from the previous guests. My wife asked if it was possible to have an alternative room just to change in, but was told “no, you’ll have to use the toilet”. It only got worse from there on … drinks were charged at the bar at probably double the normal rate, with spirits charged at £8 a measure. Bottles of typical ‘house-wine’ were charged at £18 a bottle and the staff, none of which appeared to have been older than 18, showed little courtesy or regard for the guests.

When we eventually obtained the key for our room in an annexe out at the rear of the venue, it was disappointing. Whoever had cleaned the room had not bothered to check their work. The toilet was unclean and stained whilst the rear facing window overlooked a piece of unkempt farmland with what appeared to be abandoned vehicles.

The next morning breakfast was provided at an extra cost of £8.25 per person. The catering staff were nonchalant and slow. The cooked breakfast we asked for was eventually served cold and when asked if they could provide a warm breakfast, the plate was taken and not returned. Likewise with a cup of coffee and a pot of tea. It took a stern complaint to the catering manager to rectify these things. Simple things to get right, but something was drastically wrong with the service from the kitchen.

Upon leaving, when checking out, the complimentary room offer had been rescinded and a subsequent charge made on my credit card, by the time we had travelled home that day.

No doubt other guest may have enjoyed their stay and not found the same level of poor service or expensive drinks and breakfast. But alas, we will never return to such a poorly managed facility again.

Great food. Sad about the service. A disinterested receptionist, dead flowers on the table (why?), friends order for glass of wine during main course never arrived with the meal. Just a shame really. If we left dead flowers on our dining table it would say more than anything that we simply don't care enough. No apology either.

The menu was very limited. There were six of us but three of us didn't have starters as they were very limited! The food was good but we we're put in the conservatory and it had no ambiance! Service and staff very nice but will not pho there again.
