“A great place to spend a winter evening”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

We ate here recently with several friends and lingered over excellent service and very good food the clam chowder is excellent there is a very large and delicious list of beers on tap. I had the clams and pasta which had a very ample portion of fresh clams. The source was good a well. The swordfish was great. The service very attentive without creating a feeling of being rushed. The location at the harbor is also a big plus.

“Excellent food, a few weaknesses”
Reviewed December 23, 2012

The food here is excellent, and has been on all of our annual trips here. The decor has evolved ("assisted" by damage from tropical storms!) and is more spare and informal than it used to be. The menu has evolved little, and could use some freshening. The service was efficient but businesslike almost to the point of being brusque; in the past it has been friendlier.

This is an the best. Great food, friendly service nice location. You can't go wrong, but please don't take my seat! Only downfall is that it can be difficult to get a seat.

“Sitting at the bar talking George is a tradition”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

We belly up to the bar at the Stone House pretty frequently. George is the bartender and it's always a good conversation. He know what we want (typically) and it's in front of us before our coats are off. There are two menus (bar and regular) with enough of a selection of really well prepared food. I lean towards their soups or the chili and my friend gets anything from the tuna club, a burger, or ribs. We're always satified.

“A Place (with a split personality problem) that Visitors Love.”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

The Stone Houise is exactly what visitors to our little seaside New England town want to see when they go out for dinner. The location on our town marina is picture perfect. The decor and ambience hit the right balance of classic coastal restaurant and upscale simple elegance. The staff are sufficiently well trained and professional to match their "big-city" peers. And the menu offers enough variety that you'd have to be a very fussy person to not find something of interest.

But...restaurants are, in the end, about the food. And alas, The Stone House suffers from something of a split personality. One can sit in the bar area and order from a separate menu that features much lower pricing and quite good food with a reasonably wide variety of choices. By comparison, the "fancy" menu offered in the main dining room is not all that much better food-wise (both are solidly good) and the pricing is about double.

I usially leave feeling a tiny bit let down (if not simply overcharged) whenever we order from the main dining room menu. To be fair to the hard working crew at the Stone House, my criticism of the main dining room seems, even to me, unfair given that I'm "complaining" about their best effort relative to a very high value alternative that they also provide! Nonetheless, that's how it strikes me, and I can't shake the feeling that there could be a better way to manage dueling menus under the same roof. Whitfield's Restaurant, on the town Green, does exactly this by simply having a section of simpler and lower price items in a defined section of their one menu, and not segregating the seating.

If pricing is something you don't worry about too much, just grab a table in the main dining room and order away. I'm confident you will be pleased with the appetizers and the entrees, especially the fish and shellfish based choices. And if you're looking for especially good value at a lovely spot in Guilford, hit the bar area (early on weekend nights).

And please try not to be like me. Instead, sit back, enjoy and don't let the price/value difference between the two menus and seating areas bug you!
