“5 star for what it is...Nice accommodations...Great price.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2012

This is undoubtedly an older hotel but it is well cared for and to me that is what matters. The room was very clean and from what I could see from our room, what could be updated, was. i.e. State of the art alarm clock/cd player. Nice table and chairs. Newer bed spread. Good mattress.

I have to say, the hallway wasn't as inviting as the room... A little dark, very hot and musty smelling (To be fair, it was an awful humid day, ugh. But hint: Febreze is great stuff and long lasting!). Also, the back door which said it would be locked from 11 pm to 7 am, was not...and really showed no way that it could be.
Other than those things, it was great.

And as mentioned, they gave a voucher for a free breakfast but we had to get back on the road at 4 a.m so unfortunately, we couldn't use it.

I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: They happily have smoking rooms, which we had so it's hard to say. These rooms are usually away...

We appreciation your feedback. I was sorry you did not stay until breakfast started to enjoy the complimentary full breakfast of choice that is served daily. I know the breakfast coupon is good for 90 days so I hope you stop thru on a future trip and get to enjoy it.

The good- This hotel is run by very friendly people. I got this hotel for 3 nights on Priceline. The hotel is clean, breakfast is fantastic (restaurant style and included with your stay), good location to see the Mystic/New London area, free wi fi and free parking.

The bad- This is an old hotel and smells like cleaning spray and cigarettes. Other than that it was great and I'm happy with the price. Don't stay here if you expect a sparkling new hotel.

We stayed at the Groton Inn and Suites on a Priceline bid for a trip to Mohegan Sun Casino. We got a room in a building across the parking lot on the second floor.
The room was cheap motel quality. Blinds on the windows, no shades or drapes. The double bed was old and cranky. We paid $50 on Priceline and got a $50 room.
On the upside, breakfast is included with the room and it was quite good actually.
Free internet and computer room are a plus too.
Its not much, but we have definately stayed at worse places.
Average.

This aging property provides what one expects: clean, spacious, nicely appointed sleeping/lounging quarters, sundry amenities on site, and a restaurant. It is very handy to the Interstate and to Groton and New London. The staff are very, very competent and could not be more accommodating and helpful. Pricing is decent, though not cheap, by any means. The single negative is that this hotel is tired. Decor and furnishings appear not to have been updated/upgraded in twenty or more years, and show it; there is a fairly powerful odor of disinfectant/deodorant (which I suspect is the vehicle to move into the Non-Smoking world). The restaurant/bar is decorated in a rustic, almost "old west" sort of motif, which is again, tired. It must be said, though, that the food and service were outstanding, pricing not unreasonable. We will return.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us and the food at the Oakwood Bar and Grill. The F&B department works to provide weekly specials with the full menu that will appeal to a variety of tastes. We hope you will return....we have great fall specials during the foliage season and beyond...

My wife and I took a short trip (5 days) to celebrate our birthdays and anniversary, all of which occur within a 2 week span. Like most, we hit the travel sites and started reading reviews. Factoring in the amenities, proximity to attractions and price, we chose groton Inn and Suites.
Immediately after negotiating a great rate on Priceline, I called the Inn to make a few requests. I just had surgery and needed a 1st floor room and I also wanted a king size bed. I spoke with a rep named Irine and was assured that both would be granted.
When we arrived, we noticed the smell that's been talked about in some reviews. As far as I can tell, the smell is caused by smokers and is limited to the area immediately outside the front doors and the vestibule as you enter. I spoke with a worker who said they do their best to get rid of the odor but the number of smokers is constant and unrelenting. There's a lot I'd like to say about smoking in these types of places but this isn't the place.
The inn is dated, with laquered pine, older style TVs and a dining room out of the 70's. But, as far as I could tell, the place is well maintained and very clean. We wound up getting a 2 room junior suite with microwave, fridge, 2 TVs, an iron & board, a comfy sofa, desk and our requested king bed.
My main gripe is the poor internet connections. There's free Wi-fi and, in our room, an ethernet connection (more secure). The Wi-fi was horrible. It was slow, intermittent and often non-existent. A call to the front desk and then the help line of the provider was no help. I tried the hard connection and that was no better. So, if you don't have a smartphone or 3/4G connection on your Ipad plan on using a local hotspot. If not for this, it woul've gotten a higher ratimg.
That's really the only gripe. We were greeted warmly by Irine and given voucher for breakfast the following mornig. Everyone we had contact with was friendly, personable and very willing to help. As an aside, it seemed that Irine was working the desk every time we went by, always quick with a greeting and smile. The breakfast was standard fare but well prepared, hot and served greciously. To that end, please don't forget to leave a tip for the servers, I
A clean, safe, friendly Inn to grab a few winks, a good, hot breakfast (free) and right in the middle of the great SE Connecticut attractions. Worth a look.

Staff is very courtious and profesionnel. Rooms are clean and large. I have sent 3 months in this Hotel for work and I do recommended this Hotel to all. The hotel is located near the Walmart and about 10 miles from the Foxwood Casino.

Room Tip: Near Foxwood Casino

Stayed here for two nights during the Newport Chowder Cookoff. As countless reviews have already stated, the lobby smelled disgusting, and beyond it smelled strongly of some kind of failed attempt at an air freshener. It was incredibly loud at all hours. Everything about the hotel seemed old and desperately in need of renovation. There was mildew in the bathroom. If you like hotels that are overpriced for the services they offer, this is right up your alley. We found ourselves heading out late at night just to avoid being in the room.

Room Tip: The first floor is really smelly and noisy.
