“Great staff but hotel needs some upgrades”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2010

I've stayed at this Hampton Inn Groton many times (10+ nights total). Overall, this hotel is decent, particularly for the money, but does require significant renovation.

The good:
The staff is fantastic--very attentive and friendly. In fact, that's the major selling point of this hotel and main reason I have been loyal to this hotel. The breakfast is far better than most other free breakfasts (although I stick with the yogurt and fruit, there is a hot bar of eggs/bacon/homefries that looks somewhat tempting). There is free Wifi and plenty of TV channels. Housekeeping does a pretty good job and is friendly. Like others have said, there is a pool and small fitness room (with 3 decent pieces of cardio--very small but not terrible). The hotel is close to the 95, but far enough where you don't really hear the noise or smell the fumes. If you can stay on the back end of the hotel, there is a nice forest to wake up to.

The bad:
The rooms in the hotel are outdated and desperately need to be renovated. In particular, I wish they would update the beds/bedding. The pillows tend to smell not-so-fresh (to be polite) and the bedding has been (overly) washed and is very rough. The mattresses are okay but rather bouncy (I have a feeling they're not very new). Everytime I stay here my body ends up breaking out with pimples (and I'm far from my teenage years), so I'm allergic to something--dust mites maybe? The rooms are very early-to-mid 1990's and the TVs match that era.

Bottom line:
Not a bad hotel by any means. The staff makes up for a lot of the insufficiencies. I really wish there were a Starwood hotel nearby as the quality is typically superior. I'm finding that the Hilton brand is far from what it used to be, and this particular Hampton needs some serious renovation/updating.

Stayed at Hampton Inn overnight while in area - nothing extraordinarily special but it was clean, the bed was comfortable, quiet, and included a convenient continental breakfast the next morning. We paid $109/night in May, off season, and was well worth all its amenities for close proximity to I-95, the casinos, and the shore, especially for families.
(As this was an overnight stay, we did not use the pool or fitness center).

This is our second stay at this particular Hampton Inn. The staff is superb--super friendly and helpful. Check in and checkout was a breeze. We were cordially greeted at each coming and going. The housekeepers did a fine job, and regular maintenance is apparently ongoing. The rooms were clean, public areas well kept, and the swimming pool was super clean and warm. Wished there was a hot tub/spa, but the pool sufficed.
The location couldn't be easier to access. Right off I-95. Conveniently close to the casinos, shopping and sightseeing in the Mystic, Ct. area. Two doors away from an Applebees restaurant- no need to move the car if you happen to be hungry.
The hotel features a free hot breakfast every morning, coffee and tea all day, and sometimes fresh baked cookies in the evening.
The room was large and had a mini refrigerator and microwave oven. The bed was comfortable, and the room temperature was easy to control. The bathroom was very clean and well stocked with towels and toiletries. The only thing missing was a room safe (we personally like the ones able to store a laptop), but you can store your valuables at the front desk safe if need be. Always a good idea as hotel rooms are ridiculously easy to access when you are out ( as we had the misfortune of finding out after an expensive camera went permanently missing last year from their sister property down the road).
All in all we were very pleased with this property, and would definitely stay again and recommend it to friends and family.

Clean quiet and comfortable. Only about twenty minutes or so from the way overpriced casino hotels and about five minutes from Mystic. The staff was very friendly and the free breakfast was better than most. We would definitely stay here again on our next trip.

This is my first time trying Hampton Inn hotels and i'm impressed by it. The rooms are big and clean. There is no musky smell. The bathroom is well lit, clean and has proper amenities. Hotel even comes with free wifi internet. Also had a heated pool but alas didn't get the chance to use it.

Lets jump right into it. On check in we found that our Non-Smoking King bedded room was actually a smoking double/double bedded room. When I stated that I really didn't care about the bedding situation but I paid "Advanced Purchase" for a non-smoking room and placed in the comment section on line that "Non-smoking was the most important need". We were checking in at 1:30 pm (which is before their checkin time of 3:00) and they were telling us all their non-smoking rooms were taken. First of all, if you are going to tell someone their room type is not available then put away all those key of unchecked in guest are behind you. Why were we the ones selected not to get the room choice? The front desk guy said it was out of his control that his GM made these decisions to put people into specific rooms. Lame excuse.

During out stay we found that our room really really smelled and the house keeping basically did not exist. There was hair on my pillow, public hair in the toilet, bar of soap in tub, and a used towel on the back of the door.

The next morning we commented to the front desk girl about the issues just for the record. Her immediate response was "If you told us last night we could of moved you to another room." So I asked if they were sold out and she said "NO". I then asked "Did you have non-smoking king beds available?" She said "No but we did have non-smoking rooms with two double beds." WHAT?!?

This place better get their stories straight when dealing with guests. There is no excuse for what we went thru.
