One would expect Greenwich to have a true 5 star, over the top , grand hotel... somewhere that all the hedge fund millionaires as well as the 'old money' can wine, dine, have friends stay & entertain. It doesnt. This is a 4 star in my books - perfectly pleasant but service is not up to scratch to call it a 5 star. You however have little choice in Greenwich as The Inn has such a dreadful reputation (read the reviews) - this is the better choice and the location allows you to walk down 'the Avenue' and shop. It is somehow a little ...bland...average ...not bad just nothing to write home about. Make sure you get a room facing the water - you dont want to see the car park or the main road. The restaurant is quite good and popular.

We had a surprisingly pleasant stay at the Delamar - they had some lovely touches which really made out stay worthwhile. When we arrived, they greeted us with an ice tea and told us that in the evening there would be a free wine reception followed by a boat trip around the harbor. When we asked how much the boat trip was, they said it was complimentary, which was wonderful.

We are pretty fussy about wines and so did not expect much from the wine reception. But when we tasted what was on offer we were amazed - the Riesling was delicious and balanced. The accompanying cheeses were also very tasty. We were then allowed to take out wine with us onto the cute antique wooden boat. The trip itself was the highlight of our weekend - the sun was setting as our captain drove us around the beautiful harbor of Greenwich.

The hotel is well run with beautifully decorated rooms. The entire property was clean and well maintained. The staff were helpful and professional. Our only gripe was that there is a slip road where cars are parked right beneath the balconies by the harborfront. This is probably due to regulations but is a bit of an eyesore outside your bedroom. However, if you get a room on the 2nd floor upwards, you will probably not notice the road too much (we were on the 1st floor).

Enjoy!

Upon arrival, all went smoothly with both of our party's two booked rooms for two nights.

The rooms are beautifully appointed, spacious, with views of the harbor and a sitting area on the balcony. Then the problems seemed to creep up: The room's cordless phone did not work; the light over the sink in the bathroom was burned out; we requested a second robe three times and never received it; the air conditioner on the ceiling in front of the closet was leaking; many of the amenities were not restocked after the first night.; no turn-down service was given to one of the rooms on either night.

Both rooms were vacated by 8:15 the following morning; upon our return at 4 pm, the rooms still had NOT been made up or serviced. The manager's "reasoning" was they are very busy that weekend. Whose problem is that? Why couldn't the rooms have been serviced in the morning before others checked out? This is not the type of service or treatment you would expect from a property of this caliber. Furthermore, nothing was offered as a courtesy in an attempt to ameliorate the situation.

In addition, the coffee/espresso/cappucino machine that is available for guests au gratis was out-of-service for a majority of our weekend stay.

The wine and cheese reception the hotel offers on Friday and Saturday between 5 & 7pm is a nice touch. But here, again, the service was lacking: Arriving at the reception at 6pm on Friday, the attendant said the platters would be removed "soon" so he was not going to refill the cheese and fruit platter. Why?

Bottom line: The cumulative effect of these incidents underscores the lack of proper training, which translates into giving this property low marks for its service level.

I stayed at the Delamar on my wedding night, and had an awful experience. After arriving at the hotel at 2:30 am after our wedding, my husband and I were disturbed by knocks on our door six times between three and six in the morning! I would not have believed this if it didn't happen to me. The hotel staff kept erroneously sending different employees to our room thinking we were other guests. After each knock, we got angrier, and decided to speak with the manager. The gentleman at the front desk explained that the manager was away. We left our contact information, and never received a call back. When we tried to contact the manager several times after our stay to inform him that out wedding night had been ruined, there was never anyone who would deal with us. The delamar obviously does not care about customer service.

This place isn't quite a Ritz or Four Seasons, but it's hard to find much to complain about. The decor is Mediterranean. Nice room, very comfy bed, immaculate housekeeping.

It didn't matter to me, but I noticed that while their web site claims 24 hour room service, in fact "In-Room Dining is available from 7am to 10pm". As has been noted by others, the restaurant situation is peculiar -- from the hotel lobby, you have to take a circuitous route, up and down some stairs, to get to the restaurant.

The staff was very helpful. (In fact, a little obsequious for my taste. Must they use your name twice in every sentence?)

Note that there is a mandatory $15/day service charge, which covers all gratuities (and, I love this, "complimentary" valet parking.)
