The food is very tasty, lots of seasoning, and always good. Doesn't change much on the menu.
Could use a little revamping on the menu. The wait staff is always very friendly and efficient.
The bar crowd has a nice group of people. Not very loud. Pasta night has some interesting ingredients that work very well.

We have been twice now to the Black Seal. Both times in winter, and both on bitterly cold days. The food, the atmosphere and the company have warmed us more than expected. Everyone (service and patrons) are very helpful and friendly. Food is well priced and the mixed drinks are well made. Specials are delicious and a good amount...not too much, not to little.

You will note other reviews of the Black Seal are all over the place. I don't understand the negative ones. We have been going here for many years, and never have been disappointed. We drive 30 miles one way just to go there. We went recently on a November Tuesday night, and the dining room was about half-full; this is kind of off-season for Essex. It is a small bar and restaurant. During the summer, especially on weekends, the place is very busy with locals, tourists, and boaters. On this visit, they were having a "prime rib" night, which my spouse ordered. The portion was huge; over an inch thick, rare and juicy. It could easily feed two. We brought most of it home. I had fried cod/fish and chips. We also had appetizers of calamari - very good but their marinara sauce is kind of peppery, so consider that when ordering. I also had an onion soup which was very good, but could have been a little hotter.

Go to spot when ever I'm in Essex. The food and service is always good. The people are friendly and the atmosphere is lively. I would recommend the Black Seal to anyone.
