The service was friendly and helpful. The food was a disappointment. Had the Bay Scollop casserole. Kinda heavy and confused, the shrimp cocktail was ok

“Locals type resturant and bar”
Reviewed July 29, 2012

I am perplexed by Essex CT. We were there on our boat and looking for a good meal. We tried the Black Seal and found it lively but NOISY in the bar area. Lots of locals hanging out and lots of overly loud conversation. The food was so-so. The perplexing part is there doesn't seem to be much of an alternative. The Gris gets mixed reviews and, well, there aren't any other restaurants in the town. Essex is so charming and upscale that you'd think there would be something extraordinary but, apparently not, so the Black Seal will have to do. Recommend not sitting in the bar area if you want to have any type of a conversation.
