We popped in on a Saturday aftrenoon after seeing a house down the road to re-fuel and check out the local on a Saturday afternoon. The staff were fantastic and didn't bat an eyelid after our 2 year old son had pasted most of his food around the table. Ales are excellent and that is what a pub is all about. Quite quiet for a Sat afternoon but we were looked after very well. Cracking garden at the back.

Been to the Five Bells a handful of times in recent months and its always been very good and the staff are lovely. If you're ever in Wickham then give it a go and its sister pub Lord Lyon which is equally good.

We were disappointed, to be honest. Too "stark" and with little "warmth", the staff were great but the place lacked soul. We had dinner here some years ago and it was superb; now it is poorly furnished, hard seats, not great food but more than adequate - but somehow lacking in character.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, I have never heard our pub being described as soulless, stark or with little warmth, I'm not convinced you were in the right pub to be honest, except that our staff are indeed great, but as we are heavily beamed, have two roaing fires, including a huge inglenook, the vast majority of our seats are sprung but we do have cusions available for the odd more traditional pub chairs that we also have dotted around. We are a very traditional pub and having just spent a huge amount on a total refurburbishment, I beg to differ with your views, but you are entitled to them.
It's a shame you didn't mention this to anyone at the time, or perhaps you were elsewhere?

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to unearth the treasure that is the five bells.
The food, staff and accommodation were all second to none. The menu was varied and not the usual pub 'grubb' that's offered in many of pubs I have visited.
And last but in no means least the beers were exceptional! I highly recommend visiting this place even for a small drink!

We first visited this pub when it was under the old management - deserted on a Sunday lunchtime and the epitome of a soulless pub. How things have changed. The interior has been re styled; gone are the old patterned carpets, replaced by what looks like the original wooden floor - rustic and simple and far more in keeping with the quaint external appearance of the pub. There's a very pleasant under cover seating area outside and a big garden There's a huge selection of Real Ales on pump, a couple of Ciders and Perry. So as to sample several of the ales without consuming vast amounts you can buy them in one-third of a pint sampling glasses - what a great idea. The menu had lots of variety and specials on a chalk board - included was several choices of pizza - ours were delicious and perfectly cooked in the wood burning pizza oven. A minor problem on the next table was handled very adeptly by the staff. What a great example of how a proper pub should be like. Can't wait to visit again and sample some more of those ales!
