Love the hot dogs and onion rings! Burgers and seafood are great too. So good. Never disappointed. Specials are great too. I may try a bison burger one of these days.

“Can't Go Wrong”
Reviewed August 3, 2014

The Merritt Canteen has been serving up great food since the early 1940's. It is located just a mile off of the Merritt Parkway and served as an oasis for the early travelers on the Parkway. Not much has changed in those years with respect to simplicity of the establishment or the simplicity of the food.

Counter service puts you right on the edge of the kitchen when you place your order. All items are cooked to order and there is a definite feeling of pride for each item placed on the plate. The staples are, of course, hot dogs and hamburgers, fries and onion rings. Newer items to the menu include: fish, chicken, shellfish, bison burgers, and softshell crab. The menu goes on and on with soups, salads, etc. On this visit, we stuck with the basics - hot dogs, burgers, patty melts, fries, and rings. The hot dogs were fried and have a great "crisp" factor on that first bite. Topped with spicy brown mustard, relish, and kraut and you can't go wrong. The patty melt was phenomenal. A burger on a rye grilled cheese and finished with sauteed onions - how can you go wrong. Perfectly cooked, it was full of flavor and a feast to enjoy. Fries were crispy and a nicely accompanied the sandwiches. The portion was very large and easily satisfied the whole table. Onion rings, however, were another story - they were remarkable. Large rings with a generous battering that were crispy and crunchy. They could have used a touch more salt, but overall were some of the best onion rings I have enjoyed.

The Merritt Canteen is nothing fancy. An open kitchen with counter service greets you at the door. Booths and large windows looking out on Main Street provide little atmosphere. The allure of the Canteen is the food. I can't wait to go back and try some other offerings from the fryer and grill.

“not as good as it was twenty years ago”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

Look up greasy spoon in dictionary and a picture of the merritt canteen will be next to it. Since changing hands there has been a turn to the mexican side. Chili has become hotter and selections have brought a more tex mex feel to food. Hot dog with the works is still a good bet. The onion rings and fries will soak through the paper holder and bag in minutes. Grease overload. Not for the calorie conscience. Waits can be long and space is limited. to live a long healthy life limit how often you visit. Daily visitors must die young. Taste good but you know it is not the best food and must be forbidden by most Drs. in the state.
