Iron Horse Resort
Reviewed January 15, 2007

My husband and I just stayed at the Iron Horse Resort for 4 nights. Overall, the hotel was not luxurious, but it was fine for our needs. We stayed in the sport studio, and it was great for 2 people. It was handy to have a kitchenette, as we were able to prepare our own breakfast and save time and money before we hit the slopes.

Pros:
- ski-in/ski-out access (the lodge is situated on the side of the mountain, and you can access Winter Park resort via the "Corridor" run -- if you're looking at the trail map, look at the bottom left)
- 2 hot tubs
- friendly staff
- on complimentary bus route (you can wait inside and see when the bus pulls up to the hotel entrance)

Cons:
- the rooms could use some updating (towels, linens, carpets, and decor)
- the hotel restaurant was just OK (it has a quaint ambiance, but the food wasn't as good as we had expected - it was OK, but a little overpriced for the quality)
- no internet access in the rooms (you need to go to the lobby with your laptop, pay $5, and access the internet while you sit there)

As a whole, we were pleased with our stay. If you're looking for a place where you can easily access the mountain, this resort is in a great location. If you don't rent a car, and are looking for a place where you can walk to restaurants/bars, you might want to consider another hotel. However, if you have a car, getting around shouldn't be a problem. (This hotel is located about 2 blocks from the Winter Park Resort Base, but you need to drive or take the bus to get to downtown Winter Park.)

A friend and I shared a studio over Thanksgiving. We are huge fans of Winter Park Resort and we chose the Iron Horse because of its slopeside location. Although the Iron Horse is a little way from Winter Park's village and downtown Winter Park, it's the perfect place for people who come to ski. It's best if you can get in building D because that's the one with access to the ski trail. We loved the fact that we could sleep in until 9:00, ski for a few hours, ski right back to our condo for lunch and be back on the hill by 1:00. Also, Winter Park Resort has a shuttle that runs every hour or half hour depending on the time of the season. The shuttle will take you to the village or downtown. The room itself was very clean and modern. Although it was a little "cozy", the murphy bed was quite comfortable and there were plenty of dishes for us to prepare our meals. Perfect for two or three people. Although we never visited the onsite restaurant we did notice they had rail drinks for $2.25 and 35 cent wings-not bad for a ski town. The ski-in, ski-out might be a little difficult for beginners. You ski out unto a flat catwalk which requires a little poling or skating. However, to ski in you have to take Mary Jane, a challenging blue run. If necessary, you could hit a blue groomer off of the Sunnyside lift and then take a catwalk to the base of Mary Jane and then walk up a short way to another catwalk that will take you back to the condo. If you are a beginner this resort might not be the best place to stay; probably better to be closer to the village or downtown. However, if you are coming for the snow you will not be dissappointed with the Iron Horse Resort.

Our studio apartment was comfortable and quiet and about 50 feet from the bridge that takes you directly on to the slopes. We originally stayed at the Iron Horse about 8 years ago and the decor doesn't appear to have been updated in that time. Everything is furnished in brown and beige and we began to long to see some colour in both the condo and the public rooms.

The staff are all very friendly and helpful, from receptionists through to the shuttle drivers, but there is definitely room for improvement in the services provided.

We were on a bed and breakfast deal and the buffet meal laid out in the bar area was fresh and fully adequate, but it was always a bit of a lottery on what would be missing each morning. Admittedly, we were always the last down, but over the two weeks we were there we had to ask reception (no staff manning the bar) for butter, jam and even the toaster and go hunting for bowls, spoons and knives. Hot water was sometimes in an urn, sometimes in a jug on a hotplate and sometimes (lukewarm) in a flask. Some of the other guests hadn't got the hang of the idea that you should clear your disposable dishes/cutlery into the rubbish bin (in a different place each day), so dirty things were left around. We got the feeling that what was provided depended on who was on duty that day.

Cleaning of our room was also sporadic. There was meant to be a daily tidy up/wipe round and a full clean every 4 days. This worked for the first 3 days, then no-one came in at all for the next 2 days, then we only had a very basic service (rubbish & dishwasher emptying) for 3 days, by which time the studio was looking distinctly grubby, particularly in the bathroom. We would have cleaned it ourselves if there were any cleaning materials. After complaining a couple of times, good service resumed on our 9th day, although it didn't give a particularly good impression when we were given a half full bottle of lotion as part of the replenishment of supplies!

This erratic service seemed to extend to other areas with 2 of the 4 dryers in the laundry room being out of order for several days and the washing powder dispenser not being refilled for a couple of days. We were also amused by the number of profanities a fellow guest managed to get in one sentence when he found that there were no towels available for the pool or jacuzzi at 4.30pm - just the time everyone wanted to soak away their skiing aches and pains.

We weren't sure in the end whether the overall management of the hotel needed tightening up, they were short staffed, or both. It wasn't enough to spoil our holiday, but it is certainly an irritant when you have to keep chasing for what should be basic amenities.

Upon arriving we discovered that my husband had mistakingly made reservations at the Iron Horse Inn in Steamboat Springs instead of the Iron Horse Resort in Winterpark. The woman on the phone who had made the reservation said that she thought he said we were coming in from Winterpark and not going to Winterpark. Anyway, the staff felt really terrible because we had been dropped off by our private transportation and here we were at their front desk with all of our luggage. They searched thoroughly through their computers and luckily were able to squeeze us in and accomodate 2 couples at the last minute with a minor catch: switching rooms, which we didn't mind at all, we were just relieved to get a room.

The first two nights we stayed in a two bedroom (one had twin beds) two bath suite, fully furnished dining and living area with very nice furniture and fireplace. The third night we had to downsize to a one bedroom one bath suite which was a little too crammed for four, but we managed. Both of the rooms had either a sofa bed or a bed that pulls of the wall. The kitchen was fully stocked with all the cooking essentials all had to do was hop on the hotel shuttle which runs every hour on the hour and bought groceries for the four day stay. One night we ate at the hotel restaurant which I have to say was very good. During the day from 3-5 p.m. the hotel offers free cider and hot chocolate.

My husband and his brother used the convenient ski in ski out method since they have skied before while we, the girls took the bus (provided by Winterpark I believe) that runs every 30 minutes. On a few occasions we walked to the Zephyr which was only about 10 minutes away. The Zephyr is where all the action takes place.

Unfortunately, we did not use the hottubs, but we walked around and saw that people were indeed enjoying them. They have three that I could see and they do look like home spas that fit maybe 4-5 people. They also have a indoor/outdoor pool that I assume was heated. I have to mention that the fitness center was very well equipped because I have been to some that claim to have a fitness center and find out that all they have is a treadmill and a stairstepper!

This was my first time skiing (first time seeing snow for that matter) and I cannot wait to go back! Winterpark is an awesome place and the Iron Horse Resort and its friendly staff helped make it an awesome experience. I cannot wait to go back and we will definitely book at the Iron Horse Resort (not the Iron Horse Inn) again!

1st time to Winter Park and obviously to Iron Horse. It's easy to get to, close to Denver only about 1 1/2hrs there and shorter back to Denver. The snow was fantastic and the room was exactly what we wanted. They even cleaned our room each day which was nice. The bed was actually kind of comfortable, which is not normal. I would recommend getting your rentals at the ski shop attached to Iron Horse. The covered parking garage was tight, but a big plus to have. It was nice to have a kitchen so we didn't have to spend a fortune on meals each day. The only downfall was where we were located on the mountain. The run that you hop onto from the resort is a green and it flattens out just after the resort. You'd either have to pole or not fully put on your snowboard. All in all, I'd go back again though.

We stayed at the Iron Horse for 4 nights in mid-Jan 2006. This was a ski trip for 4 guys who work together. The condo was quite small for the 4 of us, smaller than the photos from the website make it appear. However, the convenience was amazing, and more than made up for the cramped quarters. To get to the ski area we just took an elevator to the 5th floor and walked right out to the ski run. There can be some pulling down to the lift on the way out, and if you don't approach from the correct run on the way in, you may have to pull also. But it is still much more convenient than anything else in the area except for the Zephyr Mtn Lodge. Much better than staying farther away and having to ride a shuttle or load up a vehicle and drive in each day. I would definitely stay there again.

My partner and I stayed Christmas week. Unfortunately, we had a delay at the airport and arrived 3 hours later than we should have, making our journey 19 hours in total. The reception staff were extremely sympathetic (although it wasn't their fault)and made us feel very welcome. We had a studio flat, which we loved - the fireplace was very romantic. We also had a mountain view, overlooking the pool and hot-tubs, which we made use of. A kettle and some tea bags wouldn't have gone a miss in the room however. As the brochure says, it is ski-in, ski-out. Although, I do agree with a previous reviewer that the most direct route back (Mary Jane) is a challenging blue. On our last day, we found a different route - Bluebell, into Corona and then Corridor - very scenic and much easier on the legs at the end of the day. The shuttle bus service is brilliant and picks you up from any venue in town whenever you want. We loved the place (accommodation and skiing)and would definitely go back.
